Framework Laptop 12 Meets Fedora | Fedora Podcast 061

Framework does not have a storefront you can walk into. What they do have is a laptop you can order that arrives with Fedora already on it.

Michael Tunnell, Senior Marketing Manager for Linux Marketing at Framework, joined us to talk about the Laptop 12 and the Fedora KDE preload.

What we covered:

  • Why Fedora KDE specifically: KDE tested best for stylus and touchscreen support, and Fedora moves fast enough on the kernel for brand new Wildcat Lake silicon
  • The 80 percent figure, and why it matters that it was measured before any preload existed
  • What Framework means by officially supported, including a dedicated Linux support specialist customers can reach directly
  • Bugs found on this hardware and pushed upstream into Fedora and the kernel: a CPU limiter and thermals issue, audio modules, and screen rotation
  • Expansion cards, with two of four slots on the 12 running Thunderbolt 4
  • ZMK open source keyboard firmware, open CAD files, and 3D printable parts

This one pairs well with episode 44, where Matt Hartley came on to talk about the Framework and Fedora partnership before any of this shipped.
