Force logged out after a few seconds then freeze when attempting to log back in

Been having an issue for a while where once I log in I get force logged out after about a minute. If I try to immediately log back in my system freezes. I usually use KDE so my work around for now has been to first log into GNOME,log out,then log into KDE. No idea what could be causing this.
Unsure if related but I also have to log into GNOME first to get screen capture in Discord and OBS working in KDE.

This is on Fedora 43

Had this same problem occur several times. I can’t remember what I was doing prior, so I’ve got no details to share. I’ve got two Fedora systems, one 42 and one 43. I believe this happened on the 42 system.

Check the system and user journals for errors at around the time that you where logged out.

To read the journals use journalctl in a terminal. See: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/viewing-logs/. There are other introductory tutorials, but be careful of AI nonsense. Use man journalctl to see what the suggested options do. If your system isn’t providing a GUI, you can use a console terminal or view past journal entries on the system using a Live USB Installer (see the —directory option).

It looked like there were some errors,but I wasn’t really sure what to make of them. Oddly enough pressing ctrl+alt+F2 put me back into KDE desktop after it force logged me out without having to enter my password. No freeze.
It also seems like it isn’t force logging me out anymore plus my other issue with not being able to immediately be able to screen capture is resolved.

Not sure what happened. If it does happen again I’ll check the journals,but it seems ok for now.

You should fix the problem in /etc//environment to eliminate as the cause of your issues.

How would I do that? What does this mean?

On a new install /etc/environment is an empty file.
You may have added something to it.

If you can post here head /etc/environment and we can suggest a fix for that error.

I think I had to change this to fix my monitors not running at the correct refresh rate in games. Games wouldn’t go higher than 60fps

The error said there was a line without termination character.
This probably means you added the last line and failed to press <enter> at the end before saving it.

Open that file (/etc/environment) with nano, ensure there is a newline character at the end of each line, and save it again. That should eliminate the error shown by @barryascott above and may eliminate the problem completely.

No, you should just type the Enter key after the last character in that line. Then save the file.

I briefly booted into my Windows partition to fix one of my drives being read only since that was a suggestion I found and it still seems to be force logging me out.

Journal is giving the same error about the environments file. Double checked it. Hopefully that should be fixed now? I’ll have to see if it logs me out again or not
