Previously, the gnome-tweak-tool was able to enable the display of files and folders on the desktop. Where has this setting moved now?

The ability to display desktop icons was removed from nautilus, but there is a shell extension (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1465/desktop-icons/) that works okay.

I hope the left panel is not going to be removed in the next releases…

For some added context, the reason was because Nautilus’s codebase was heavily constrained due to being tied so closely to the shell.

Another option, if the Shell extension functionality doesn’t suffice, is to install Nemo and run its nemo-desktop executable as a startup program. It has no problems interoperating with Nautilus as its file browser, if so configured.

Just install the nemo package and copy /usr/share/applications/nemo-autostart.desktop to $HOME/.config/autostart/.
