How has been the experience of running Fedora as the only boot option on Intel iMac? I am not a nerd, and this is meant for a family computer usage.
This is not a good idea. An old version of MacOS may be needed to recover from hardware failures. If your iMac has a slow internal disk, an external USB3 SSD is much faster. I have an iMac14,2 which came with both a slow disk drive and a (now failed) SSD, so I use it with an external USB3 SSD and use free space on the slow internal drive for backups.
I have SSD upgraded, works ok with OCLP but I see it is not a solution anymore. Either I donate to a school or put Linux. Full disclosure, while I can do some basic stuff of tinkering, do not have energy anymore. If it can serve as a consumer grade OS, then I can live with it. Else, need to let go off ![]()
Before retiring, I worked in a group where Windows was the enterprise standard for reading memos from HQ, but actual work was done with macOS and linux. Some macOS users never got comfortable with Linux, so you will need to try it for yourself. My personal feeling is that macOS suffers from enshittification to a greater degree than Linux, so you may find you prefer one of the modern Linux desktops.
Before installing, you can experiment with different Live USB Linux desktops using ventoy: https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html.
Absolutely, I dislike everything from Big Sur and Tahoe is worse… but then, we do not have talent left on this planet earth that can build Garageband and iTunes type of software. So, we live with it. Anyway, I need a laptop (MacBook Air), so I will give away for whatever the price it is.
I have a 2017 27” intel imac on which I’ve been happily running only Fedora for almost a year now.
I have largely given up on macOS because of the reason you state. Tahoe is garbage. It makes me sad to think about how macOS (Mac OS X) was once great but has now been ruined. Switching to COSMIC Atomic was surprisingly easy, and other than the iPhone integration, there is really nothing I miss about macOS. The decline of macOS is a golden opportunity to bring more people to Linux, and to Fedora specifically. COSMIC Atomic looks great, runs fast and stable, and is a pleasure to use.
While echo the sentiments, however hard it is, I am choosing to take forward looking view. I make a living out of technology (product manager)… and as I get older, I seem to need to move outside the house and sit more often. iMac is 11-year-old, and at best can be a legacy computer for my kids. If I get a buyer, I will sell it off, else this becomes a linux machine.
I don’t own an iMac, but I’ve done this with my 2009, 2014, and 2015 MacBook Pros and it’s pretty solid with Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition. I don’t expect it to be significantly different with an iMac.
