Hello Fedora friends!
Here is the summary of the Fedora Mindshare Committee meeting held on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The Fedora Mindshare Committee is the governance body that oversees the user outreach, marketing, and community operations side of the Fedora Project. We help different teams in the Fedora community work together on initiatives that represent the project to the wider world.
In this week’s meeting, we discussed the following topics:
- SCaLE 23x Funding Request (Ticket #93)
- Beginner’s Guide Brochure Update (Ticket #94)
- Poznań Event Funding (Ticket #95)
Note: AI (Google Gemini) was used to summarize the HTML log of the public meeting. I reviewed and corrected the AI-generated output before posting.
Team Announcements & News
The meeting kicked off with several important updates for the new year:
- FESCo Election Results: The Fedora Linux 43 election cycle has concluded. Congratulations to @kevin, @zbyszek, @siosm, @dcantrell, and @duffy on their election to the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo).
- Council Strategy Summit: A reminder was shared that the deadline for feedback on the Fedora Council Strategy Summit agenda is January 14, 2026. Committee members are encouraged to provide their perspectives on high-level project strategy and goals for the upcoming year on the Fedora Discussion topic.
- Fedora Badges at FOSSASIA: @t0xic0der announced that Fedora Badges will be represented at FOSSASIA 2026 with a 15-minute talk in the web development section.
Ticket #93: [Funding Request] SCaLE 23x 2026
The Committee held a detailed discussion on Ticket #93, a funding request for the SCaLE 23x conference proposed by @lajuggler and @aacosta. The proposed budget is $7,430 USD, which represents a significant portion of the Large Event budget for the year.
Key Discussion Points
- Cost vs. Value: While the budget is high, primarily due to hotel costs in the Los Angeles area, it is lower than the 2025 budget ($9,920.88).
- New Track: SCaLE 23x will feature a dedicated Fedora & CentOS track for the first time in 2026, managed by @shaunm.
- Booth Status: Fedora receives a free booth at SCaLE, a benefit usually reserved for sponsors. While the Wiki page needs updating, the booth is a confirmed benefit.
- Budget Impact: Concerns were raised about whether this expense would limit funding for other large events later in the year. However, it was noted that few other “Large Events” (aside from FOSDEM and Flock) are currently on the radar with similar costs.
Next Steps
- Due to the timing of the request, the “start date” for the decision period is Monday, January 5th.
- A final decision (
+1,0,-1) is required by Friday, January 16, 2026. - Committee members will engage with event owners on the ticket to clarify remaining questions about the booth and schedule before casting their votes.
Ticket #94: Update of the brochure “A Beginners Guide”
The Committee discussed Ticket #94, regarding the update of the “Beginner’s Guide” brochure from @pboy. This topic overlaps with an existing Design Team ticket (#121).
- Physical & Digital Needs: There is a clear need for a physical brochure for events like FOSDEM, as well as a digital version that could live on the Join SIG documentation site.
- Collaboration: The project requires input from the Join SIG, Ambassadors, and the Docs team.
- Decision: The Committee agreed to close the Mindshare ticket and defer the work to the Design Team ticket #121. The plan is to prioritize the physical brochure for immediate event needs and then move to a “Phase 2” for digitizing the content and integrating it with Weblate for localization.
Ticket #95: Funding Request: XV Poznańska Impreza Wolnego Oprogramowania (2026)
Due to time constraints, the discussion for Ticket #95 was postponed. As the event is scheduled for May/June 2026, there is ample time to review the request. Committee members are asked to review the ticket asynchronously before the next meeting.
Action Items
- @mindshare: Add feedback/questions to Ticket #93 (SCaLE 23x) and cast a final vote (
+1/+0/-1) no later than Friday, January 16, 2026. - @jflory7: Follow up on Mindshare Ticket #94, redirect discussion to Design Team Ticket #121, and close the Mindshare ticket.
- @ekidney: Add an update to Design Team Ticket #121 summarizing the committee’s discussion, including the plan for physical/digital versions and context from previous brochure work.
- @mindshare: Review Ticket #95 (Poznań) and add comments or a vote ahead of the next meeting on January 22, 2026.
