Fedora keeps freezing constantly and randomly

Hello,

I am new to Fedora and linux in general and I had linux mint for a couple of months before deciding to change distros as I started to dislike how linux mint looked

I changed to Pop OS, then had this freezing issue that would occur randomly every time I use my laptop. I thought this was an issue with the kernel so I upgraded to the latest version (5.15) from 5.13 but it was still the same. I then switched to Ubuntu 21.10 but it was still the same, the issue was still there. I finally switched to fedora thinking its some issue about Ubuntu based distros, but the freezing issue is still there.

When my computer freezes, no input works and if my laptop was playing a sound it would keep repeating the last 1-2 seconds it played.

This has really been frustrating and I donā€™t want to switch back to windows or linux mint where I didnā€™t have those issues.

Welcome to ask :fedora:! What kind of system are you using? Laptop or desktop PC? Any other details you can provide like after crash output from journalctl -b -1 --priority=3

Freezes such as you describe here are usually (a) nasty to understand and debug in that thereā€™s often no ā€œcrashā€, (b) hardware related (IMO). First place Iā€™d start after running into issues on a variety of kernels and user platforms is to run hardware diagnostics. When first booting, hit whatever key your hardware manufacturer needs to get you to the BIOS boot screen and see if you can find diagnostics. Usually you can at least run CPU, memory and storage device diagnostics.
Once you have eliminated hardware as being the source of your issue, you can get back to getting your favorite platform running the way you like it again. As @jakfrost says, at that point, your hardware details can help people in this forum with the rest of your journey.

That is the error log it gave me for the command you told me to enter, and my computer is a laptop, model HP-14sdq1504s

Seems to be a kernel bug as reported at 207981 ā€“ ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20200110/psobject-220) for ASUS TUF FX505DT laptop. I have occasionally seen this on my system twice now (Asus B550M Pro). Next boot, everything was fine, and I havenā€™t seen it for a bit. This is affecting a number of laptop hardware mfgā€™s including HP and Lenovo, and Asus. :weary:

i have switched to version kernel 5.4.162 and my laptops seemed to have stopped crashing. Is this issue mainly for more later kernel versions? I want to be able to go to a later kernel version because i cannot open exFAT filesystems on my usb stick

Iā€™m not sure really as it comes and goes for me and hasnā€™t happened but two times actually so I was just attributing it to my using kernel 5.14 in my case. So that could be promise for you to hang on since it hasnā€™t happened since I went to Rawhide, which is on kernel ā€¦

Will that really work? Because i have tried 5.16-rc3 before and that did not work and crashes were still there

Maybe you could use kernel 5.10-lts. Since exFAT already supported in kernel 5.7 and above.

Here kernel 5.10-LTS from Fedora Copr: kwizart/kernel-longterm-5.10.

Iā€™ve changed the disk scheduler from bfq using a udev rule and are no longer getting random freezes.

My system with fedora 34 and the 5.15 kernels began to have short term ā€˜freezesā€™ of the type described. The link you posted led me to entering the udev rule suggested and it switched my SSD scheduler from bfq to mq-deadline.

So far I have seen no further freezes but will report back if it does not help.

I am not sure that is the same thing.

My system has been having short term (5 - 30 secs) hangs (freezes) where the mouse is responsive but the screen apps do not respond immediately, then all at once catch up.

What you posted seems mostly related to long term freezes and freezes during boot.

I really believe my issue is io related since I routinely have the system at ~75% load with boinc tasks and that requires some disk io that may be influenced by the wrong scheduler.

I am still monitoring since I made the udev rule change to see if things improved.

Indeed, in one of the threads, changes related to the SSD were the solution for a user.

I have not experienced the issue myself, so I can just provide the ā€œcollectionā€ of potentially related issues. Maybe some of it proves helpful if changes around SSD donā€™t help.

Iā€™ve recently started encountering display freezes on Fedora 35 that occur seemingly randomly while Iā€™m working. Although nothing changes on screen, music continues to play from track to track without issue in the background. I discovered that I could SSH in and that the Xwayland process was pegged at 100% on one of the cores. Running kill -3 Xwayland unfroze the screen, although a bunch of apps die in the process and audio gets muted. I believe for me itā€™s VSCode (flatpak) related. Iā€™ll try killing VSCode first next time.
