Fedora KDE vs Kinoite performance/smoothness

Hi.

I’m using as daily driver Fedora KDE 44 on my desktop and Kinoite 44 on my laptop. Everything working just fine, set both up the way I need them. However, wanted to have an idea how Kinoite will do on my desktop.
So, I now have both Fed KDE and Kinoite installed side by side on my desktop:

Separate ssd’s so that they do not interfere with each other.

What I did not expect is: Kinoite seems much snappier, everything is smoother. Of course, the way to use apps is a bit dif, using flatpaks and distrobox for most stuff in Kinoite, but … why is it snappier? It does not make any sense to me.

Can anyone enlighten me why is a dif between them? Again, not complaining about normal Fedora KDE, works like a charm and my workflows are simpler of course in it compared to K.

Thanks!
G.

One thing I’m curious about - it looks like you have fractional scaling (110%) on the KDE Edition setup, but not on the Kinoite setup.

If you go back to 100% scaling on your KDE Edition, does it make any difference to responsiveness?

Hmm, didn’t think about that. Changed that in fedora kde to 100, does not make any dif. I checked 125 as well, same peformance. I’ll do more tests, but for now I think I will use Kinoite for a while.

Is there a difference in specs between the 2 discs regarding read/write speeds? That could explain it.

Yes, there is: kinoite is on a gen4 m2, and fedora kde is on a gen5 m2. Both m2s are fury, 2 tb. So in theory fedora kde has a slight advantage vs kinoite.

Just the opposite of what you would expect.
I also use Kinoite and I must say I also have the same feeling about the speed as you have, Kinoite feels a bit snappier. I however have 1 disk with only Kinoite, but I have used the regular KDE version not long ago and when starting with Kinoite again I also had the idea it was snappier. Good to know I am not the only one.

Normal fedora has more bloat and services running than atomic.

Running Silverblue, same feelings. This distro seems to be smoothier than any of the GNOME experience I’ve had. I have to say I love Fedora Atomic.

I do keep more apps installed in fedora kde as native dnf, compared to k that has the vast majority as flatpaks. And in normal kde, i freely used the dnf to remove apps i do not use. Anyway, will do some more tests when time allows it.
