Fedora KDE takes a liftime to start up

Hi, I’m a new Linux user, Fedora KDE Plasma 43 is my first distro. Installed it a few days ago and have been trying to get it to work since. Please help :((

The OS takes ages to start up (for comparison Windows on the same device takes half the time to start up if not less):

glitterincats@fedora:~$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 7.186s (firmware) + 8.327s (loader) + 1.180s (kernel) + 4.983s (initrd) + 1min 28.972s (userspace) = 1min 50.650s
graphical.target reached after 1min 28.971s in userspace.

The system is very slow the first ~10 minutes of it working (cursor lagging, apps taking a minute to open), but then everything is fine. I tried the basic things you should when setting up Fedora + installing Nvidia drivers according to the guide on their website. I tried searching for a different solution, but didn’t find anyone with similar problems.

This is my system info:

Is there anything I can do? I know it’s “only” two minutes, but I know my laptop is capable of starting up faster. I hope the info I provided is enough…

RPM Fusion is the recommended way to install Nvidia on Fedora. (link fixed)

Do you have many drives installed? (I see you have more than usual, but not all mounted) The only time I see really really long start up times is when Windoze and many drives are present. I don’t know why.

The ‘slow for ten minutes’ is weird, no idea about that.

Fedora is installed on /dev/sdb3, which is a partition on your 5400rpm spinning HDD /dev/sdb.

That’s going to be considerably slower than installing to the SSD.

I guess your SSD contains Windows. Is it possible to shrink the Windows partition to make room for Fedora on there? (I guess it’s tight on a 240GB drive though.)

Probably after 10 minutes the OS has loaded most of what it regularly uses into RAM and doesn’t need to hit the HDD so hard.

Thank you for the reply! That’s the same conclusion I came to within the day the post was under review. I would like to install Fedora on the main SSD, but Windows doesn’t let me shrink the primary partition, because it is surrounded by system partitions (this is from windows cmd – already uninstalled Fedora):

DISKPART> list partition

  Partition ### Type Size Offset
  ------------- ---------------- ------- -------
  Partition 1 System 350 MB 1024 KB
  Partition 2 Reserved 128 MB 351 MB
  Partition 3 Primary 222 GB 479 MB
  Partition 4 Recovery 673 MB 222 GB

I have no idea if there’s a way around it – I think the recovery partition is necessary and I shouldn’t delete it:

DISKPART> detail partition

Partition 4
Type : de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
Hidden : Yes
Required: Yes
Attrib : 0X8000000000000001
Offset in Bytes: 239357394944

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
  ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
* Volume 4 RAW Partition 673 MB Healthy Hidden

I’m so frustrated with the whole thing I want to format the whole laptop… please help

EDIT: I have 120 GB free on the SSD drive, so space will not be the issue.

Thanks! I think I didn’t install the drivers correctly. Luckily I plan on reinstalling Fedora and installing the drivers the right way this time…

Try it in the Disk Management GUI tool in Windows maybe?

I’m sure that I’ve been able to shrink partitions in Windows like this before, even when the layout was like yours with a recovery partition at the end of the disk.

It only lets me shrink the partition by 8GB even though it says in the Disk Management that there is 121,21GB of free space on the disk. The reason are unmovable files. Now I’m trying to fix the issue, hopefully I will have Fedora installed on the SSD before the morning…

Thanks for the help! Now it’s “only” a windows issue

For what it’s worth, I recall that these steps worked for me when I needed to shrink a Windows installation to make room for a Linux install.

Thanks, but unfortunately it didn’t work for me (it raised the available space to only 20 GB), but gparted got the job done. Right now I’m waiting for the installation of Fedora to finish up :))

This could be one issue. Mismatched RAM DIMMs sometimes cause really strange performance issues.
