I’m installing Fedora on my D: drive, which does not have Windows installed on it. That drive contains other files that I want to keep.
My D: drive currently has:
1712.02 GB NTFS
150 GB unallocated
1000 MB EFI System Partition
I’m trying to install Fedora into the 150 GB of unallocated space without affecting the files on the 1712.02 GB NTFS partition or my Windows installation.
What could be causing the gen_grub_cfgstub_script failed error, and what should I check or change to get the installation working?
I see it in the Fedora KDE installer near the end of the installation, when it’s installing the bootloader. I don’t have a command that produced the error.
This is the exact error message shown by the installer:
“org.fedoraproject.anaconda.bootloaderinstallationerror: gen_grub_cfgstub_script failed”
This is an image of the error:
It is a failure to run the script /usr/bin/gen_grub_cfgstub which should create the file /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg. It unfortunate that the error details is hidden from the user, so it is hard to guess what it could have been.
The installer keeps the gen_grub_cfgstub output in its log files in the live session, so read them before you quit the installer. Open Konsole and run grep -B 2 -A 20 gen_grub_cfgstub /tmp/program.log, then check /tmp/anaconda.log around the same time if program.log only shows the exit code. Also run lsblk -f and check that the 1000 MB EFI System Partition on the D: drive shows vfat.
