Fedora freezes just before login screen

Hi,

I’ve been using fedora for over a year now and haven’t run into any major issues. I’m not a linux newbie, but I’m not a tinkerer either. However, the last couple of fedora kernel updates are giving me a weird issue. After the system boots up, just before the login screen, the laptop freezes. Sometimes the mouse pointer is visible, sometimes not. This is happening in two recent versions of the update kernel-6.19.7-200.fc43.x86_64 and kernel-6.18.16-200.fc43.x86_64. I’m just switching the to the stable version kernel-6.18.13-200.fc43.x86_64 what isn’t troubling me.

I don’t care about being on the most updated version at all times, however with the next update, I’m afraid that my stable version will be viped out. I’ve marked it as user-installed after asking a couple of LLMs. But, I don’t know if that’s good enough. Please let me know if you folks have any idea on how to fix the problem and/or how to freeze the stable version of the kernel so that I can wait for a stable update slowly. If you’re running it, it won’t get removed. later versions which aren’t currently in use will be removed to maintain your “I want 3 kernels” or whatever you have it set to. Pinning it will have no effect apparently - it’ll still get removed if it’s the oldest unused kernel, but as you’ll always be running it, it should be “protected”.

You could try booting with the rhgb and quiet flags removed and seeing what the last thing emitted is when the laptop freezes (or just hit ESC as it boots to achieve the same effect. That may give you some clues as to the root cause, or at least the last thing that happened before everything locks up.

If you take a journalctl log from a boot with the “good” kernel (6.18.13) and compare it with the log from a boot with a problem kernel - are there any obvious differences?

Thanks for bringing this up: There is indeed some difference. I am not able to understand the difference. In the “good” kernel, there is a no log indicating that it is reading thunderbolt config (I think) or what comes further. But I don’t know what matters and what doesn’t. For what its worth I have been running into a similar:ish issue in Long-term Fedora install suddenly started freezing multiple times a day after package upgrade - #11 by rbjorklin
where I was also running a 6.18.x (where “x” was some low single digit I think) and I’ve now been having issues on and off for the past two weeks.

This has pushed me towards wanting to adopt Silverblue so that I have a definitive rollback option.

The newer kernel version has fixed the issue for me - at least partially. I have a different issue now though - laptop freezes if it sleeps on occasion. But it is much better.

I was thinking of installing kinoite! But, this is my main system and I don’t want to wipe it.

What kernel version are you on now? I’m on 6.19.9-200.fc43.x86_64 and while my machine started just fine today I want to say I tried the same kernel yesterday and had issues. I had to jump through the hoop of starting my system by editing the kernel command line.

It’s still odd, because I had never had this issue until that unfortunate update to 6.18.16-200.fc43.x86_64. And even now, the 6.18.13-200.fc43.x86_64 is solid.
