Hi Fedora community! This is a summary of the fortnightly meeting of the Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team, held on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The DEI Team serves to help the Fedora Project become a more diverse and inclusive community for people of all backgrounds. In this meeting, we focused on the team’s migration to the new Fedora Forge (Forgejo), previewed topics for the upcoming Fedora Council Strategy Summit 2026, and kicked off volunteer recruitment for the Fedora Mentor Summit 2026.
In this week’s meeting, we discussed the following topics:
-
DEI Advisor Updates: A look-ahead at the Council Strategy Summit in February 2026.
-
Ticket #61: Detailed planning for the DEI Team’s migration to Forgejo.
-
Ticket #62: Planning and volunteer recruitment for Fedora Mentor Summit 2026.
Note: AI (Google Gemini) was used to summarize the HTML log of the public meeting. I reviewed and corrected the AI-generated output before posting.
Intros, welcomes, hellos
The meeting began with a roll call. There was a brief discussion regarding the need to clean up the membership list of the diversity-team FAS group, as it currently contains many inactive members.
Team announcements & news
Several general project announcements were shared:
-
Data Center Migration: There is an ongoing data center migration this week. Impact should be limited, but more info is available in the Infrastructure planning ticket.
-
Matrix Upgrade: The Fedora Matrix homeserver was upgraded. Users on mobile can now use the Element X client for better performance.
-
Fedora at Kirinyaga University: A successful docs workshop was held, showing students how to contribute in real-time.
DEI Advisor updates to the team
@jonatoni and @jflory7 discussed the upcoming Fedora Council Strategy Summit scheduled for February 2026.
-
Focus Areas: While the Summit focus areas are still under discussion, the current proposed topics are Strategy & Governance, Initiatives (including a review of active initiatives), and Engineering (Konflux, AI in Fedora, Flathub/Flatpak).
-
Governance & Funding: A key topic will be operationalizing Fedora Strategy 2028. This includes scoping out a nonprofit entity to handle sponsorship activities, such as travel grants. This is particularly relevant to the DEI Team given past challenges with reimbursements in certain regions.
-
Community Input: The agenda is public, and feedback is welcome via the council tag on Fedora Discussion or Matrix.
Follow-ups from last meeting
The team reviewed action items from the November 13th meeting.
-
Forgejo Migration: @jonatoni and @lochipi have started the migration effort. Some repositories have already been moved.
-
Contributor Onboarding: @jflory7 completed the action item to reply to the contributor onboarding thread with insights from the previous meeting.
Ticket discussions
The team triaged three tickets for today’s meeting: #61, #62, and #63. Due to time constraints, #63 (Week of Diversity) was deferred to an asynchronous discussion/action item.
#61: Migrate the DEI team repo to Fedora Forge (Forgejo)
Link: Issue #61
The team discussed the ongoing migration of their repositories from GitLab to the new Fedora Forge (Forgejo) instance.
-
Status: Several repositories have already been moved to forge.fedoraproject.org/dei.
-
Plan: The team aims to finish the migration by the end of January. The “home” planning/ticket repository will be the last to move.
-
Docs Pipeline: There is an outstanding task to migrate the Fedora Docs publishing pipeline. @jonatoni and @lochipi will connect with the Docs Team via @pbokoc for assistance.
-
Education: @jonatoni suggested hosting a recorded video call to walk the team through Forgejo to create “evergreen” content for future contributors.
#62: Fedora Mentor Summit 2026
Link: Issue #62
Planning has begun for the Fedora Mentor Summit 2026, which will take place alongside Flock to Fedora in June 2026 (Prague).
-
Volunteers Needed: The primary goal right now is to recruit volunteers to help organize the event.
-
Scope: The team agreed to focus on the three successful activities from the previous year to keep the scope manageable and easier for volunteers to own:
- Sticker Match session
- Mentor Match lunch
- Contributor Recognition Award
-
Action: @recursedd volunteered to draft a forum post to recruit helpers.
Action Items
- @recursedd: Draft and post a new Fedora Discussion topic in the dei-team tag to recruit new volunteers for the next Fedora Mentor Summit 2026 event.
#63: Week of Diversity 2026
Link: Issue #63
Due to time constraints, this topic was not discussed in depth, but an action item was assigned to kickstart the planning.
