Are we limiting who is voting now [1]? Why? I joined Fedora as a contributor because I wanted to vote for someone I knew (I was an user of course). So I guess, that won’t be possible in the future (?)
This IMHO just amplifies the disparity in votes for “popular” candidates. It also forbids users [1] from participating. Notice that a membership that can expire and must be awarded by proving some contributions would impact all elections but the impact will be greater at Council and Mindshare as they only require FPCA.
Scenario: I contribute to Fedora as a packager but after a period I need to stop doing the technical work. After a year I still use Fedora and I spot a candidate at the Council election that I would like to vote for. I cannot do it anymore because my membership expired.
Scenario 2: I am a Fedora user that likes X, I spot a Council candidate that wants to promote that in the Fedora strategy. I cannot vote for them because I am not a “contributor”.
I am also aware of the Elections Guide [2].
[1] I understand we are limiting by FPCA currently and by fedora user I mean someone that has a FAS account and has signed the FPCA.
