Fedora ai-ml-sig meeting: 2026-03-26

Apologies, I got distracted this week and didn’t think we had topics so there was no meeting announcement. Turns out, there was plenty of discussion to be had around naming and future direction.

Meeting Summary (couresy of Bot Aurélien)

Proposal: Evolve the AI/ML SIG into the Fedora AI Working Group (WG)

  • A proposal was discussed to evolve the current fedora-ai-ml-sig into a broader “Working Group” (WG) to serve as an umbrella for various AI-related activities, including but not limited to packaging.
  • There was a debate on the name, specifically “AI” versus “AI/ML”.
  • The name “AI” was proposed for better branding and to attract new contributors.
  • The name “AI/ML” was favored by some members to be more inclusive and better for community building, signaling support for work that doesn’t fall into the specific category of common AI objections.
  • The consensus was to keep all discussions in the current channels for now to minimize administrative overhead, with the understanding that more specific, focused groups can be created later if traffic and participation increase significantly.
  • The topic of brainstorming activities for a May 2026 intern was deferred to a future meeting due to time.

Misc Announcements

  • It was announced that ROCm 7.2.1 was released and updates would be coming to Rawhide soon.

Decisions and Action Items

  • Decision: The group agreed to rename itself to the AI/ML Working Group.
  • Action: @jflory7 to write an update on Ticket #27 summarizing the discussion, the decision, and the next steps.
