Fedora 45 Beta Cosmic spin fails to start into a graphical session

Problem

Fedora 45 Beta Cosmic spin doesn’t start into a graphical session, as it should. This involves both the installation Live image and the install system. You get dropped to a text terminal instead.

In the system journal, you can see an error:

Failed to add device /dev/dri/card1: Failed to obtain file descriptor for drm device: /dev/dri/card1

Cause

There’s a clash between Cosmic Greeter and kmscon both allocating the graphics card.

Workarounds

  1. If you’re running the installation image, use the text prompt to log in as liveuser with no password
  2. Run the following command: sudo systemd-run --unit=cosmic-kmscon-test --collect /bin/sh -c 'systemctl stop kmsconvt@tty1.service; systemctl restart cosmic-greeter.service'
