Good morning, last night I decided to upgrade from Fedora 43 to version 44.
I downloaded the update from the software and installed it, this morning it was still stuck at 97%
Try pressing the Esc key. It should show you what process is stuck.
It is showing “ACPI BIOS Error (bug)”. It might mean that you need to update your PC’s firmware.
I doubt there is much that you can do to recover from this situation without resetting your PC and hoping for the best.
If the PC comes back up after you power it off, you should try running sudo dnf distro-sync. That command ought to retrieve any updates that might have been missed due to the failed offline update.
If your PC doesn’t boot successfully after you power it off, try booting with one of the fallback kernels.
So I have to force shut down and hope it restarts properly, right?
Worst case scenario is a hardware failure. Do you have a Live USB key you can try if the system fails to boot? I would use that to check drive free space and “health”. Over the years I have noticed that upgrades are more likely to reveal hardware issues that don’t affect routine usage.
Thanks a lot, with the command sudo dnf distro-sync I was able to repair the files and correctly install Fedora 44. However, I noticed that when I shut down the operating system it froze at the logo and I had to force shut down it. Is this normal?

No, that is not normal. Have you checked to see if your PC vendor has any firmware updates?
Also, does the hang-on-shutdown problem happen if you boot your PC with the previous kernel?
I don’t know, I have to check. But it happened to me with ZorinOs too.
If completely different hardware is exhibiting the same symptoms, then maybe there is some uncommon third-party software or configuration you are using on both of the systems?

I just searched “ZorinOs” and I see that is in an alternative OS? If so, it was me who misunderstood you. I had guessed that you were referring to another brand of PC.
If the same hang-on-shutdown behavior happens with two completely different operating systems on the same hardware, then it is very likely a bug (or a defect) in the hardware. A firmware update might fix the problem. You’ll have to consult your PC vendor’s website to find out if there are any available firmware updates for your BIOS and how to apply them.

I actually checked and the latest version is installed, I tried shutting down again but this time it shut down normally. Even with Zorin it rarely happened.
