Hey, it looks like your `rpm-ostreed` daemon is crashing on startup with a `SIGBUS` (Signal 7) error. This usually happens when the daemon tries to read a memory-mapped repository cache file that has become corrupted or truncated.

Since the daemon is crashing on start, standard `rpm-ostree cleanup` commands won't work. You'll need to clear the cache manually.

Run these steps to fix it:

1. **Delete the corrupted cache:**
   ```bash
   sudo rm -rf /var/cache/rpm-ostree/*
  1. Restart the daemon:
    Bash
    sudo systemctl restart rpm-ostreed.service
  2. Re-run your upgrade:
    Bash
    rpm-ostree upgrade
Note: The upgrade will take a bit longer than usual because it has to rebuild the metadata cache from scratch.
One other thing to check: If it still crashes after clearing the cache, your root partition might be completely full. A SIGBUS can also trigger when memory-mapped file writes fail due to 0 bytes of available space. You can verify your free space by running df -h /.
Thank you for your reply. It does look like the root partition is full:
$ df -h /
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
composefs 19M 19M 0 100% /
What is a safe method to take care of the problem?
The `composefs` mount is a read-only filesystem generated to exactly fit the immutable system image, which is why it always reports as full.
To see your *actual* available disk space, you need to check your writable partition instead:
```bash
df \
  -h \
  /var
```
If `/var` shows plenty of space, then your earlier `SIGBUS` crash was just cache corruption, and you should be good to go after clearing it. If `/var` genuinely is full, here are the safest ways to reclaim storage without breaking your system:
## 1. Clear Flatpak Leftovers
Flatpak runtimes eat up a lot of space. This removes dependencies that are no longer needed by your installed apps.
```bash
flatpak \
  uninstall \
  --unused
```
## 2. Clean Up Ostree Caches
This clears out cached rpm metadata and pending/failed deployments. It won't touch your current boot or your rollback deployment.
```bash
rpm-ostree \
  cleanup \
  -m \
  -p
```
## 3. Vacuum System Journals
System logs can silently balloon into the gigabytes. This command keeps only the last 7 days of logs.
```bash
sudo \
  journalctl \
  --vacuum-time=7d
```
## 4. Prune Containers
Unused container images and stopped containers take up massive amounts of space in `/var`.
```bash
podman \
  system \
  prune
```
## 5. Clear Temp Files
These temporary caches can be safely deleted and will automatically regenerate as the system needs them.
```bash
sudo \
  rm \
  -rf \
  /var/tmp/*
```
@777kaz777, your posts in this thread look like unfiltered LLM output. I encourage you to review Fedora’s AI contribution policy, which also applies here in Discourse.
At the very least, please make clear that you are posting LLM output, so anyone trying your suggestions know that they are potentially following untested LLM steps.
My /var was not full.
~$ df -h /var
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p3 465G 357G 106G 78% /var
I still get the same original error when I run the rpm-ostree upgrade command.
Thanks for your time addressing this problem.
I was not able to resolve the problem. I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed Fedora 44. I did test my system ram and it failed. Perhaps that had something to do with the cause of the initial problem. rpm-ostree upgrade commands work properly now.
