Fedora 44 kernel 7.2.5 causes AMDGPU display problems

Continuing the discussion from Fedora 44 kernel 7.2.5 causes AMDGPU display problems and HDMI failure on ThinkPad T14 Gen 3:

Thank you, Chris, I was happy to see that you had a simple solution. Unfortunately it did not work on my Fedora desktop. It is running Fedora 44, originally installed with Fedora 42.

I did what you suggested:

  1. Boot into a previous kernel (7.2.4)
  2. sudo dnf update --refresh *-firmware (no output)
  3. sudo dnf reinstall kernel* (reinstalled)
  4. sudo reboot
  5. Boot into 7.2.5 kernel

No changes. The UI is still laggy enough to be unusable.

I have also run a normal update afterwards:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh --offline
sudo dnf offline reboot

I got regular package updates (most recently vim packages), but nothing else. They applied fine.

I suspect the issue is I’m not getting the fix due to some error with my package repos, but I’m not sure. I have some added repos because I was working with ollama a while back. It’s possible they’re causing issues.

dnf check comes back clean (no output).

Any help would be appreciated. I am using a backup computer to type this, but I would really like my Fedora desktop back. Thank you so much in advance!

Edit: Additional information follows.

Symptoms:

I do not get a black screen, but (it appears) the AMD driver does not load. SDDM loads and I can log in, but the whole time it is lagging, which I assume is because it’s falling back to some default driver. I can switch to a text console with Ctrl-Alt-F3, and I can ssh into it, which is how I’m collecting this information.

I do not see any excessive resource use (CPU, memory, I/O). With the exception of slow rendering, everything appears normal. I can log in, and programs start as normal (e.g. my Vorta backup runs on login). I just can’t control the mouse because it jumps all over the place, and it renders slow.

Hardware:
GPU: product: Navi 31 [Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX/7900 GRE/7900M]
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI MS-7E12
Monitors: One Asus Pro 4k and one Asus 1440p in dual configuration. I have not tried others, but I suspect the high pixel count contributes to how slow it is.

Software:
Fedora release is 44. It is the workstation spin, originally installed at version 42 and then upgraded incrementally (at least once a week).

I run KDE Plasma desktop.

Additional logs:

I am seeing many instances of this in journal:

sddm-helper-start-wayland[1541]: "amdgpu: amdgpu_query_sw_info(amdgpu_sw_info_address_prt_wa_control_bit) failed.\nMESA: error: amdgpu: ac_query_gpu_info failed.\n"

And:

sddm-helper-start-wayland[1541]: "kwin_core: Failed to open drm node : No such file or directory\nkwin_scene_opengl: couldn't find dev node for drm device \n"

There is no /dev/drm, but there is a /dev/dri directory.

Your problem can be assumed to be a different one because you do not have an AMD 680M:

Unfortunately, I can currently not take over much more cases. But I add a few tags to make this easier to find for respective experts.

I also update the topic name (maybe you can further refine it?), because the “solution does not work for me” is misleading → as mentioned, I expect you have a different problem.

We have at this time a lot of feedback that the 680M issue is solved, so that’s another indicator that suggests a different issue when it’s not working somewhere. But the key indicator remains that you have no 680M :classic_smiley:

Also, at first glance, I see you have a lot of external repos: if others have not the issue of yours, one of the external repos`packages might be related. That said, your kernel is obviously not tainted.

My suggestion would be to add more details of your context (incl. what Fedora variant you use, hardware, software, customizations, etc.), what is the exact error, how does it manifest and when, when does it reproduce and when not, and can you get logs? E.g., when 7.2.5 is broken but 7.2.4 works, can you then boot into 7.2.5 (even if all is black), wait some time, force reboot, and then boot back to 7.2.4 and get logs of the previous 7.2.5 boot, or is the then-previous log still 7.2.4? Proper logs would be something from, e.g., sudo journalctl -k --boot=-1 --no-hostname (-1 is the then-previous boot, -k is kernel) and maybe additionally sudo journalctl --boot=-1 --no-hostname (full logs, not only kernel)

Hopefully, someone can take over this case.

If you tried today, now already some time after this update was pushed to stable, I expect you already had it installed in an earlier update yesterday or the day before. So it is likely not relevant that nothing was found to be updated in that case: the 20260916 you have shown is the current one. So that’s fine.

Thank you for confirming that it’s unrelated and other advice. I will add some more information and revise the title. I think it did indeed break around the same time, but I didn’t notice until later. I used Discover for updates and just told it to apply updates and power off then I didn’t return for a day or two.

try sudo dracut --kver 7.2.5-200.fc44.$(uname -m) --force to regenerate the initramfs file for 7.2.5

You could also try the 7.2.6 kernel
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2026-1649616d86

Thank you for replying.

Just to make sure I understand:

  1. Before running dracut, do I boot into the 7.2.5 kernel?
  2. If I update to 7.2.6, will I have to “unfreeze” it later or will upgrades continue normally after that?

dracut --force rebuilds the initramfs for the running kernel.
The option --kver some_kernel_version does rebuild for the specified kernel version, not necessarily the current kernel.

  1. I don’t know what exactly you mean with unfreeze, but updates will continue normally. So an upcoming kernel-7.2.7 will be installed once available in the updates repository.

UPDATE: install the 7.2.6 kernel while running the working 7.2.4 kernel. This will prevent the system from removing the 7.2.4 kernel.

Ok I tried dracut. I was running the 7.2.5 kernel at the time. I made sure the version was exactly the same between the running kernel and the version provided to dracut. I then booted into the same (7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64)

Now I get the SDDM login as before, but now when I log in, I’m only seeing a black screen with my mouse pointer. I can move the mouse, but the desktop no longer appears. I can still switch to text console and ssh into it.

Dracut did give me a warning about bluetooth, which I do have on that motherboard, but I had turned it off earlier. Only mentioning that in case it’s relevant.

EDIT: forgot to add that booting into 7.2.4 exhibits the same problem.

Did you rebuild the initramfs for 7.2.4 too by mistake?
Pls post output of ls -l /boot/initramfs-* /boot/vmlinuz-*

also try rpm -V $( rpm -qa \*-firmware ). This should not give any output.

I only ran the dracut command you posted, so I don’t think so?

This returns nothing:

rpm -V amd-gpu-firmware-20260916-1.fc44.noarch

This also returns nothing:

rpm -V $( rpm -qa \*-firmware )

With the dot it gives:

package amd-ucode-firmware-20260916-1.fc44.noarch. is not installed

the dot is not part of the command

No idea why you get a black screen with 7.2.4? Maybe try to cold boot.
Did you install some other updates today, before you rebooted? The initramfs was not rebuild for 7.2.4. today.

update:

ah, this looks more like a mesa issue…
maybe try updating to mesa 26.2.3.

Could you also post output of inxi -ezxx ?

Sorry for the delay. I had to run a couple of errands. Sorry for the copy-paste error with the dot. That was my bad.

I tried what you suggested with a cold boot. I found that I do get my desktop now with 7.2.4. I also accidentally booted to 7.1.x and had the same blackout issue.

Once I had the desktop, I was able to (slowly) start a konsole session. I discovered that while I’m in the desktop, all my cores are used close to 100%. If I ctrl-alt-F3 to console, it drops back to zero. The offending process was kwin_wayland, using almost 1600% cpu (lol).

Here is the inxi output, while booted to 7.2.4:

the mesa driver in use is llvmpipe a pure software emulation. So for some reason kwin is not using the GPU at all.

pls check journal for errors (-p 3) or warnings (-p 4) , e.g journalctl -b -p 4
or post output of journalctl -b -p 3 --no-hostname --no-pager and rpm -qa mesa\* |sort

In case it is any help, I guess this bug report looks similar:

One of the commenters reports that he is also using a 7900 xtx

The command journalctl -b -p 4 shows 785 lines.

Among the errors is bluetooth, I assume related to the warning dracut gave me.
