I recently installed Fedora for the first time using kde plasma desktop 44. This was done on a laptop, a lenovo thinkpad with intel grahics. I have had it up and running for a couple of days but have been in the process of tweaking it as I go along. Two days ago I did the following things during the day:
Ran “sudo dnf install intel-media-driver” and “sudo dnf update @multimedia --setopt=“install_weak_deps=False” --exclude=PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin” following Making sure you're not a bot! , without rebooting
Using the gui to install the recommended updates, without rebooting
At the end of the day I turned off the computer with the option to perform updates. On the following day when booting up I am only able to see a mouse pointer which I can move around the screen, on top of a black background. If I press “ctrl+alt+f3” I get access to a terminal.
I have limited experience troubleshooting linux so I tried multiple things based on search results. Some of them which might be relevant are:
“sudo dnf upgrade --refresh”: Runs but makes no difference
“systemctl --user restart plasma.plasmashell.service”: Returns an error message including the text “Job for plasma.plasmashell.service failed because a fatal signal was delivered casuing the control process dump core”
Disable plasmalogin and installing and enabling sddm: Results in a login screen where I can see my username and enter my password. After doing so one program I have set to autostart pops up, and if I close it I see the following text on black background:
“Sorry! There was an error loading Folder View”

Appreciate any help on how to proceed to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

We need more information to understand the problem. There is a good chance the journal has useful details, but hidden in a mass of details that are not related to your issue. Please read https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/viewing-logs/ for an introduction to journalctl.
When reporting an issue you should provide enough detail to allow others with similar hardware to reproduce the issue:
basic data describing your system from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal (you may need to install inxi), posted as web-discoverable text using the </> button.
applying all Fedora and vendor firmware updates avoids lengthy exchanges comparing configurations and avoids wasting time on a solved problem.
Due to the current threat environment, Fedora is getting frequent updates and I expect devs are struggling to keep up. To get Fedora updates from the command-line please run sudo dnf5 update --offline --refresh This should download the new packages, perform a test, and then offer dnf5 offline --reboot which has to be run with root privileges, so sudo dnf5 offline --reboot.

Unrelated to this issue I got access to claude opus to which I gave the provided info and it provided a working solution. A side note is that I had previously prompted gemini (Among other traditional troubleshooting methods) which wasnt of any help. Here is a summary of the troubleshooting and solution:

The error is a Qt version mismatch. The key line:
Cannot load library .../libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so:
version `Qt_6.10_PRIVATE_API' not found
(required by .../libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so)
Your system has Qt 6.11 (libQt6Core.so.6.11.1), but qt5-compat-graphicaleffects was built against Qt 6.10. This causes the SEGV in plasma-login-wallpaper.
I attempted
sudo dnf reinstall qt6-qt5compat
which gave the response that the package was available but not installed. Follow by the following to identify the package owning the library
rpm -qf /usr/lib64/qt6/qml/Qt5Compat/GraphicalEffects/libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so
outputing that the file was not owned by any package.
Packages providing the library could be find with
dnf provides '*/libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so'
I installed the best looking candidate provided
rpm -qf /usr/lib64/qt6/qml/Qt5Compat/GraphicalEffects/libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so
which fixed the issue.

Glad you found the missing library, but a) we don’t know why it wasn’t installed (it is present in my LXQt system, and b) the usual procedure to determine what package provides a missing file is:
% sudo dnf5 provides /usr/lib64/qt6/qml/Qt5Compat/GraphicalEffects/libqtgraphicaleffectsplugin.so

Is there a way to find out why it wasnt installed? Now I’m able to login but got a simliar error and fixed in the same way for “kde connect” if I remember the name correctly. And when trying to launch dolphing it fails and journalctl contains

So I assume the root cause also caused this error in many other locations, and maybe should be fixed in another way than re-installing each package?
I ended up going with the nuclear option and reinstalled fedora. I hope I was unlucky and future issues will be easier to troubleshoot and fix.

Multiple missing packages indicates a serious problem that should have produced error messages. A too common cause is lack of space on the root partition, and this is more likely to go unnoticed when using btrfs because legacy tools fail to count space usage correctly. Btrfs has many advantages, but does require periodic maintenance.
