Fedora 44 kde kernel 7.2.5 black screen

Hello,

I updated one of my two laptops which are both running for fedora 44 KDE , and when I rebooted my main powerhouse system, it completely went black like after the reboot. There is a new kernel version fixing some of the issues people had before, fails to load sddm or anything graphical that isnt the grub menu , luckily have my backups and the previous kernels that still load up perfectly fine. It also released a new version of Nvidia driver which laptop does have a discrete Nvidia 3070 TI input from my troubleshooting and searching it’s most likely the kernel because before I rebooted, I double checked that it compiled properly and finish compiling so it shouldn’t be that unless there’s a severe bug in it

Just a heads up for anyone before updating and if anyone has updated and figured out how to fix this issue, please let me know.

The troubleshooting steps I did is I rebuilt in a nvidia drivers on that specific kernel and that did nothing, I also restored from BTRFS backups that completely wiped any of the new packages that came with the update still nothing

commands used:
sudo akmods --kernels 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64 --rebuild --force
sudo dracut --force --kver 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64~
systemctl status akmods.service
journalctl -fu akmods.service
pgrep -a akmods
ls -l /var/cache/akmods//

here is what is currently working, praise be to backups

Correction: it might actually be than nividia driver cause my other laptop which is a 9 year old T470 works fine , I am I might be mistaken oooops sorry

You’ll need to downgrade the linux-firmware package.

Kernel 7.2.5 is broken for me too. Kernel 7.2.4 is booting fine.

AMD Ryzen, so it is not a nvidia drivers issue.

Mine is 680M (based on 6800H), after updating to 7.2.5 it also boots to a black screen.

ok, so i am not the only one and i didnt mess up my system by rebooting too early

In short, on my ThinkPad Neo14, using 7.2.4 and 6.19 LTS as well as the rescue kernel all boot normally, but the 680M black screen in 7.2.5 seems to be related to the following article.
Amdgpu broken with fedora/44/x86_64/silverblue Version: 44.20260913.0 - Fedora Discussion

I also get a black screen when trying to boot kernel v7.2.5. I’m on a ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 AMD. The APU is an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U with Radeon Graphics. Going back to 7.2.4 works fine. I’m running disk encryption and the black screen happens before the password prompt appears.

Also got a black screen when updating to kernel 7.2.5. Hardware: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX / AMD Radeon 680M. Fortunately, I was able to simply revert to version 7.2.4-200.fc44.x86_64 using Btrfs Assistant. Waiting for a fix.

I have exactly the same ROG_Zephyrus model and same issue.

same issue on an amd integrated gpu, there was no problem on kernel 7.2.4

with a bit of help from google I found this as a quick work around for issue documentation-and-cheat-sheets/linux-general/fedora44-disable-amdgpu-grub.md at main · 77777kaz77777/documentation-and-cheat-sheets · GitHub

I am pretty sure the fix post was generate by an ai so if you used a chatbot and this look familiar that probably why but I cant tell any more these days

For temporary mitigation (the issue is confirmed for the AMD 680M gpu), see

I can downgrade manually by hand as written, thanks.

Out of curiosity: Why is dnf downgrade linux-firmware offering to downgrade to 0:20260309-1.fc44? Shouldn’t it offer to downgrade to 20260810-1.fc44?

This is strange. I now use Kinoite 45 with kernel 7.2.5-300 on a machine with an AMD 6800H CPU and a 680M GPU and I see no problems anymore. Both monitors work, I see no more artifacts in Youtube videos (Brave flatpak now uses MESA 26.2.2 ) so it looks good. I will keep trying as much as possible of the OS to see if somewhere there is something wrong, but seeing the big step it made from 44 to 45 I have good hopes.

It does if you make updates-archive repository available.

@yceachan you might want to read all the topics you have linked, including this one, before posting, because (among others) it already contains a mitigation for the concern of yours, including an elaboration of how to implement this workaround. There is no need to stick with 7.2.4 (especially given 7.2.5 is a security update), nor a need to suggest others to do so.

Hi, I have the same CPU/GPU as you have in a Lenovo Legion machine. I jumped to Kinoite 45 and after an update I got kernel 7.2.5-300. This works great. I see you have kernel 7.2.5-200 and still having problems.
I don’t know if you can get the newer kernel (7.2.5-300) for Fedora 44 but it is worth a try.

It’s the same kernel, but for different Fedora variants :classic_smiley: -300 is for F45, -200 for F44. So there is no update from -200 to -300 or so

The issue is known and is not related to the kernel, see above → Fedora 44 kde kernel 7.2.5 black screen - #15 by py0xc3

Unfortunately, the way firmware is deployed to initramfs can make this feel like a kernel issue :frowning:
