Fedora 44/KDE: adjusting size and grid snap of desktop icons

Hi All… I searched on Bing for these two topics:

  • how to make desktop icons smaller on fedora 44 kde

  • how to make desktop icons snap to a grid on fedora 44 kde

and then tried to follow the notes. However, the menu trees in the settings managers were different than the suggestions. I spent quite a bit of time with various settings categories, and could not find the correct process.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Peter Brown

Right click on some piece of empty desktop

Select “Desktop and Wallpaper”

Select Icons.

Change alignment and size as required.

Hi Steve,

I followed those steps exactly and did not see a button for Icons.

This is what I saw, below. Is Fedora 44 KDE different from before?
I looked through a LOT of system settings, but found nothing.

Peter

I have the following on KDE 44.

Try changing the layout from “Desktop” to “Folder View”.

Wow… that’s weird. I downloaded fedora 44 kde directly from the fedora website. I wonder if I need an update. I didn’t see your screen at all.

Or… was your screen/menu option grandfathered in from an earlier version of fedora kde, because you had it on your system already?

I’ll keep looking.

Thanks,

Peter

I just saw your comment here. I’ll try that.

Thanks!

It’s because you have the options in Desktop mode. Stick it into Folder and you get to fiddle with folder stuff, like icons and their layout/spacing.

Great answer. Thanks! I’ll do that.

Peter

Hi Steve… I changed the desktop to folder mode and then selected Icons and changed the size to Tiny.

But… the icons did not change their size. I tried numerous times. It was the same after I rebooted.

I also did not see any option for using grid mode, to force snapping alignment.

I’m sure that I’m missing something; I just don’t know what I’m missing.

Thanks,

Peter

Works for me - are you actually hitting “apply”?

Tiny:

Medium:

You should also have an entry in the desktop right-click menu to change all of this:

Hi Steve,

I created a couple of folders on the desktop and then used your described method.

It worked perfectly for the folders; sizing and snap to grid.

However, the application icons on the desktop were unaffected. No change in size and no snap to grid.

Thanks for your help!

I don’t actually have any icons on the desktop. In fact I don’t even have a picture; that grey background is you see is it.

So I added my browser and terminal to it, and fiddled with the sizes:

Small:

Small-Medium:

Medium:

I changed these from the right click “Icons” menu on the desktop.

All seems to still work as expected here, and I’ve not done anything (at all) to make this happen as I wasn’t even sure if it would work until I tried. As you can see though, sizes changes are reflected, and I would expect the alignment in rows and columns will also work as expected although with just two on screen, it’s not possible to demonstrate.
