Edit: the behavior has stopped and I describe my idea of why in the thread.
I mount various network locations in fstab. As a new Fedora (and Linux) user a while back I realized it is the only way to ensure that network shares are universally accessible, not just in Dolphin.
None of the network shares I want to mount are always available. That’s why I started using automounts, to try to stop the system from hanging on boot up, if a share is down. That aspect is also not working gracefully, but it’s not the topic of this post.
The machine hangs on most boot attempts, not always but mostly. “Unset automount xx” and no error, just hanging.
If I log out first and wait 5 seconds and then reboot, there’s usually no hanging.
Is anybody using automounts on Fedora 44 without the added annoyance of hanging at reboot? Or some other way of mounting shares for universal accessibility, that works without hanging at reboot?
>>I would have expected that adding nofail and a mount-timeout should have allowed you to boot when the shares are not available.
I am. It just takes this desktop 1-2 minutes to time out whatever and start running with only local machine folders. It appears to wait despite the fstab parameters.
>>Are you able to reproduce that issue with the /etc/fstab entries and share the logs from the boot screen?
I am most interested in the reboot/shut down hangs.
Network mount units automatically acquire After= dependencies on remote-fs-pre.target, network.target, plus After= and Wants= dependencies on network-online.target
…which, if I’m reading right, means that your mount unit with its 10s timeout only kicks in after network-online.target is reached.
There’s been a development and I think I might have gotten rid of these hangs.
After attempting to switch to NFS and failing, going back to SMB I decided I didn’t need to mount so many locations. After I did that the hangs seem to have disappeared.
My own reasoning is this. I had nested my mounts, which is my way of trying to say I had 3 mounts at varying depths on the same path.
Like mounting separately to different folders under /home →
Which I realized is unnecessary when you can simply add those subfolders to “places” in Dolphin and have them handy.
I wonder if the problem arose from the system unmounting /media first and then looking indefinitely for the other mounts because their “mother” had gone away.
I don’t know if that idea is plausible, but the hanging has gone. The “automount unset” hanging at least, which was the most grave. There’s still an occasional job@user1000 hanging for 39 seconds, but it’s more rare.
