Fedora 43 - Hard lock - Live cd also shuts down computer on boot

I upgraded to Fedora 43 2-3 months ago. It ran well for awhile but after an update, it hard locks randomly and very often. I ran another dnf upgrade in terminal, which updated the kernel to -108. No change.

I have no discrete GPU. System does appear stable if left idle on the lock screen. Seems to hard lock quickly when launching things that make use of the GPU.

Moreover, I installed 6.17 via koji and the system still hard locks.

Passes memtest86.

Windows is stable.

Fedora 42 live cd is stable (I’m on this now).

When it hard locks, the system remains powered but unresponsive. Monitor loses signal. Fans remain on. Case lights remain on. But case power/reset buttons do not function. Must cycle the PSU power switch.

The Fedora 43 live cd simply shuts down my PC as if I had turned it off from the case’s power button. it simply shuts off while loading on the graphical boot screen.

Couldn’t find anything interesting in the logs either. All looked normal to me. No errors that stood out.

I’ve also tested:

switched PSUs.

unplugged everything not required (all sata / usb devices as I have nvme attached to motherboard).

Just flashed my BIOS to the latest. Reset to defaults first.

No change for the better. Fedora 43 is still unusable on my system, and so is the live cd.

Fedora 44 live cd boots successfully on 6.19 kernel.

OK after additional stress testing, PC shut down on Windows as well.

So this is probably a hardware issue.

have you run a memory test?

My Son’s Windows PC showed all the signs of memory issues but new RAM did not fix it. The Intel CPU diag reported that the “int maths” test failed. So we had to replace the CPU.

Yeah memtest86.

Also prime95 on Windows. Ran for 30 minutes.

But when I run a stress test on the IGPU with OCCT. The system immediately hard locks.

I’m hoping it’s just the motherboard.

Maybe cooling issue?
I’d check the fans spin and the fans and filters are free of dust.
If the system is old it might be that the thermal paste under the CPU is not working as well as it should.

Actually I suspected a hardware at first since this issue happened after switching to a new PSU and case.

I used air to clean the board and CPU cooler.

I’m usually super careful altho my screwdriver slipped a cpl times when putting the motherboard in. I don’t however see anything that appears to be obvious damage.

I did upgrade Fedora recently as well and thought maybe I forgot to reboot. It was very strange because system was stable before I realized GPU stress triggers it.

Anyway, temps are reporting normal. Hopefully not the IGPU. Prices for everything is insane these days. And I bought used to save a few bucks so I can’t warranty it out or use my card for extended warranty protection :frowning:

Even an old crappy discrete GPU with similar performance to the Ryzen 5600g is insane.

How long will Fedora/Linux support cards like the Radeon RX 550? Might be better off buying that instead if it turns out it’s my igpu.

nomodeset works beautifully for me.

My weather site’s weather radar map isn’t loading or loading too slowly but other than that, the system is usable enough with a crippled gpu.

It was the motherboard.

Reseated CPU on old motherboard first.

New motherboard resolved symptoms.

Fedora 43 live cd still shuts off my puter though. That’s kind of annoying. But 44 works.
