Fedora 43 and Lenovo X9 - cam problem

I’ve got a Lenovo ThinkPad X9. I upgraded Fedora from 42 to 43, kernel version 6.17.7-300.fc43.x86_64. The built-in camera still doesn’t work. I’m not having issues with anything else. Has anyone managed to get the camera working with this setup?

Posting to draw attention to this. I just got my Thinkpad X1 2-in-1 Gen10, and the Lenovo forums indicate that Fedora 43 should add support for webcams on these models—a few people there say the F43 upgrade made theirs work.

Mine still doesn’t work.

bump - still doesnt work. Kernel: 6.18.7-200.fc43.x86_64, libcamera version: 0.5.2-5.

Same problem here on Lenovo Thinkpad P14s

kenrel : 6.18.8-200.fc43.x86_64
libcamera : 0.5.2-5

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share some encouraging news about the ThinkPad X9-15 Gen 1 camera support on Fedora.

Current Situation (Fedora 43)

I’m running Fedora 43 KDE Kinoite with kernel 6.17.12 on my ThinkPad X9-15 Gen 1 (model 21Q6001VCK). Like many others in this thread, the camera (Sony IMX471 sensor via Intel IPU7) is not detected out-of-the-box.

While IPU7 support was merged into the staging area starting with kernel 6.17, the IMX471 sensor driver itself was not upstreamed at that time, which is why our cameras still don’t work even with the latest Fedora 43 kernel.

Good News: Solution Arriving with Kernel 6.19

According to recent kernel development, Linux kernel 6.19 has added IMX471 to the list of supported sensors in ipu-bridge. This is the critical piece that’s been missing – the bridge driver now recognizes our sensor hardware.

What This Means for Fedora Users

Based on Fedora’s typical release cycle:

  • Fedora 44 (expected around April 2025) should ship with kernel 6.18 or possibly 6.19
  • Fedora 45 (expected around October 2025) will almost certainly include kernel 6.19+

For those who don’t want to wait for the next Fedora release, there are options:

  • Install kernel from rawhide/updates-testing once 6.19 is available
  • Use a custom kernel build with the IMX471 patches
  • Wait for backports to Fedora 43’s kernel updates

Testing and Validation Needed

Once kernel 6.19 lands in Fedora repositories (likely in updates-testing first), it would be valuable for X9 owners to:

  1. Test camera functionality with cheese, libcamera-tools, or your preferred camera app
  2. Report results back to this thread
  3. File bugs if issues persist

This is great progress for ThinkPad X9 Linux support. The hardware is excellent, and it looks like the software support is finally catching up.

Has anyone tested kernel 6.19-rc builds yet? Would be interested to hear if the camera works.

System Details:

  • Model: ThinkPad X9-15 Gen 1 (21Q6001VCK)
  • OS: Fedora 43 KDE Kinoite
  • Kernel: 6.17.12-300.fc43.x86_64
  • Camera: Sony IMX471 + Intel IPU7

Interesting stuff. I wonder what sensor my X1 2i1 G10 uses, cuz it works as of kernel 6.18, but it doesn’t look good. It’s very cropped and washed out.
