Fedora 42 (Workstation install, but using MATE) and Android file transfer over USB

I have a Pixel 3XL with severe battery bulge. Literally in danger of exploding (like a capacitor on an old circuit board, not a fireball).

Bought a new Pixel 9 but since I don’t use cloud to backup my photos for privacy reasons, getting my old photos off the old Android is kind of important to me.

First attempt at connecting over USB, the Android device actually showed up in the MATE file manager but no files were accessible.

After some google searches, I found this:

sudo dnf install gvfs-mtp kio_mtp libmtp simple-mtpfs

It seems simple-mtpfs no longer exists but I installed all the other crap.

Also went into Android settings and did the process of tapping the build-id a bunch of times to enable developer mode, then turned USB debugging on.

Now when I plug the phone into the PC, I get a notice on the phone that says “USB debugging connected” but I don’t even see the android device in the file manager.

What am I missing?

Following the instructions by “Ernest Boyd” seems to have done the trick. Looks like files are transfering now (copying all the files to a new directory, I’ll trash what isn’t needed later)

Subsequently, I found KDE Krusader, which provides a helpful GUI to sync files…
