Fedora 41/42 MATE: A Surprising, Fantastic Experience!

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my extremely positive experience with Fedora 41 MATE. I’m truly impressed with the performance of this distribution, both on bare metal and in a virtual environment.

On my old laptop, Fedora 41 MATE performs exceptionally well, with very low CPU and RAM consumption. The system is responsive and smooth, even with multiple applications open simultaneously.

But the real surprise came with my VirtualBox virtual machine. Yesterday, I cloned a VM with Fedora 41 MATE and upgraded it to the experimental version of Fedora 42 MATE. The results were simply incredible! Despite being a development version, the system is stable and even more performant.

I wanted to thank the Fedora team for their excellent work. Fedora 41 MATE is a distribution I highly recommend to anyone looking for a lightweight, efficient, and reliable operating system.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with Fedora 41 or 42 MATE?

Thanks,

mauro

Where do you get that? From ProtonVPN?
In the app you have to open the pulldown menu (top left) > settings.
Under Account you probably will need > OpenVPN / IKEv2 username ??

Are you using the vpn app or configured OpenVPN??

hi. I’m new to this. I followed the instructions on the Proton site for Fedora. Then I installed the repository and their app. My app use wireguard.

On the Download section (scrolling down) you can configure your configfile which you have to download and import into wireguard on your Linux system.

I tried proton vpn and mullvad vpn both paid. I did nothing but install the apps. I guess installing an app automatically imports the configuration file? I’m a novice and don’t understand anything about networks…

It does not. You have to create this config file on your own. After a certain time it expires and you will have to renew the file and import again.

I know that it is quite a lot for users which use vpn the first time. If you tell me exactly on which manual/instructions you are I will guide you as good as I can.

I do have protonvpn also payed and use also vireguard.

I have Fedora 41 mate and I have Proton vpn set to automatically connect to login in one of the Italian servers.
Thanks in advance for the help

Could you install the Grafical Interface of Proton VPN?

If yes continuing here:

After go back to

How to manually configure WireGuard on Linux

in the first doc. and import the file.

I followed all the instructions in this link:

  1. Download the package. Enter:

wget “https://repo.protonvpn.com/fedora-$(cat /etc/fedora-release | cut -d’ ’ -f 3)-stable/protonvpn-stable-release/protonvpn-stable-release-1.0.2-1.noarch.rpm”

  1. Install the Proton VPN repository containing the new app. Run:

sudo dnf install ./protonvpn-stable-release-1.0.2-1.noarch.rpm && sudo dnf check-update --refresh

  1. Run:

sudo dnf install proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
