Fedora 39 Will Not Boot After Typing Encryption Password

Edit: I previously posted this before, but I accidentally pressed the delete post button while I was trying to edit it to add images. Sorry.

Hi,

When I turn on my computer, make it past the GRUB menu, and type in my encryption password, I am greeted with the HP logo with the Fedora logo underneath it, and in between, a spinning circle. About 60% of the time, the circle will abruptly stop spinning, and freeze, never allowing my computer to load into GNOME. The remaining 40%, it will boot and run perfectly fine. When I press the escape button and try to boot, it will typically freeze at

Activating swap dev-zram0.swap - Compressed Swap on /dev/gram0...

I have tried using different kernels in GRUB, and the error persists. It also occurred in Fedora 37, 38, 39, and Arch Linux. Disconnecting my devices such as my keyboard and speakers have no effect, in addition to plugging out my Ethernet. Running sudo dnf distro-sync also does nothing to fix my problem.

neofetchoutput

I have searched around the internet and I have found no solutions to my issue. I notice that similar issues tend to be caused by Nvidia issues, so I must note that I am using an AMD card, not Nvidia. I’m also running Fedora 39 on “bare metal”, not any virtual machines, and I also do not have any other operating systems on my computer. Secure boot is also disabled.
Thank you so much.

Hi!
Same issue here!!!
After dnf update && dnf clean all
the system will not boot on any kernel. Have three kernel versions active.
The latest one (obviously installed in the last update) is 6.6.8-200.fc39.x86_64
Lenovo Legion 5 laptop with NVIDIA GPU.

This helped to see more detailed boot output: Laptop fails to boot after update to kernel-6.4.4-200.fc38.x86_64 - #2 by kparal

Any help? I am totally blocked.

  1. Could that be fixed thought GRUB (which works by the way…) ?!
  2. Could that be fixed through Rescue Mode??! [another blocker here: root password is not set by default, and it is a pain to do it]
  3. Is there a way to save the boot logs in a USB-stick or even on disk and then access it through Fedora Live-USB?!

Good ideas are very welcome, thanks!

edit: managed to boot into terminal mode after editing the boot options via GRUB as written here:

After some trials, I managed to repair the dnf package manager and have internet access. However even after a new dnf upgrade there are some services which cannot start normally, or they failed.

● abrtd.service loaded failed failed ABRT Daemon
● avahi-daemon.service loaded failed failed Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack
● bluetooth.service loaded failed failed Bluetooth service
● dbus-broker.service loaded failed failed D-Bus System Message Bus
● polkit.service loaded failed failed Authorization Manager
● systemd-homed.service loaded failed failed Home Area Manager
● dbus.socket loaded failed failed D-Bus System Message Bus Socket

SInce they seem to be critical for a normal boot of the system, how can one debug this issue?
Which is the most critical service which has to be fixed first?
How can this be done?

Thanks

The journalct fragments have truncated lines, but things seem to go bad with GoaBackend. How did you install GoaBackend?

There are many issues that prevent the GUI from starting while linux is running and can be used with a console or ssh session.

You are posting in a thread that does not involve Nvidia. Please start a new thread that mentions Nvidia. Since you can boot to terminal mode, you can use journalctl to see the error messages. Please post the output of inxi -Fzxx so we can see your hardware configuration. Have you installed non-free Nvidia drivers or are you using the nouveau driver provided by Fedora 39?

HI @gnwiii
Just created a new thread here: Fedora 39 failing to boot into graphical mode after update

Will continue the discussion over there.
Thanks.

Hello @jaredwood ,
Have you tried to get a terminal while waiting on the spinner? Try it with <ctrl><alt><F2> to see if you can observe any details of what is “hanging”.

@jakfrost When I press that key combination, nothing happens. Basically the entire system freezes when it freezes at the circle.

@gnwiii I never installed GoaBackend on my own. Should I try to reinstall it or something?

That is unfortunate, it would be nice to “see” what’s happening at that point.
[Edit] Have you tried to boot into the previous grub menu entry to see if you can continue from there through to boot up completely?

Can you try connecting from another system with ssh?

It is a Google thing, so if it is not a separate rpm it may have come with some Google package. If you can get a terminal to run dnf there are ways to find which package provides it.
