Fedora 39 KDE - Resolution is set correct but outside screen bounds after driver update

Hello! I am brand new to Fedora and Linux in general, but am grateful for the ability to google and wealth of knowledge already out there. However, I cannot seem to find this exact problem…

Running Fedora 39 KDE and just followed this guide: Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion to get the graphics card running properly. It definitely works and games are running smoothly now, which is great! But despite the resolution being set properly and scale being at 100%, the display is outside the bounds of the screen. See pic:

Scaling down does absolutely nothing.

Any thoughts on how this might be fixed?

Does your display have a button (or OSD function) called “Auto”, “auto adjust” or similar? It adjusts the size and position and centers it on your screen. That’s the first thing I would try.

(I sometimes have a similar issue that I can fix with a single press on “Auto”)

Isn’t auto only for VGA screens? It fixed the analogue to pixel mapping.

What does xrandr --verbose report? Post here as preformatted text, no screen shots please.

Yes, you are right! My machine on which this is happening is an older Thinkpad sitting on a docking station that is VGA connected to the monitor.

I had a freeze and hard shutdown, with it only booting in rescue mode for now…which is displaying properly of course. Here is the report in rescue mode:

What resolutions are you offered in the kde setting for display?
I assume 2560x1449 is not chosen, pick it.
Does that fix things?

2560x1440 is what it is currently set to.

The options are:
4096x2160
3840x2160
2560x1440 (the usual resolution for this device, 16:9 ratio)
1920x1080
1280x1024
1280x720
1152x864
1024x768
800x600
720x576
720x480
640x480

I have tried switching to the other 16:9 aspect ratio options, but they all still show outside the bounds.

This seems to show it is set to 3584 x 1440, which appears to be beyond the boundaries of the physical screen.

This seems to imply that you have 2 monitors and there is a major difference in the size and resolution

What happens if you disconnect the second monitor then reboot? I suspect that things will appear properly on a single screen. If so then the cause would appear to be the large difference in resolution of the 2 monitors.

The larger monitor appears to be 16 x 9 format. ( 16/9 = 1.777778 && 2560/1440 = 1.777778)
The other monitor appears to be 4 x 3 format. ( 4/3 = 1.333333 && 1024/768 = 1.333333)
Thus the differing screen formats probably is affecting the display.

You also could probably make changes in the display config in the settings panel and change the appearance as well.

If you were using 2 monitors both having the 16x9 layout this probably would not be happening.

There is no second monitor. We have only the one.

That output clearly shows 2 connected. One is connected by VGA and one by HDMI.

Why would it show two monitors if there is only one? There is only one connected by HDMI.

I cannot answer why, but your posted output does show that. Both those snippets show connected

Because the hardware in the GPU detects a load on the connector for VGA.
That could be a hardware fault.

Interesting…the GPU is brand new as of a couple days ago. It also displays correctly in rescue mode.

Occasionally there are faults even with new cards.
If nothing is connected to the VGA yet it appears to show something connected there it could be a faulty card.
Maybe it could be returned for warranty replacement.

I note that you have only shown us the output for graphics from xrandr.
Maybe the full output of inxi -Fzxx would be of use. We often ask for that to get an idea of what hardware may be involved.

I did find another thread somewhere else about “phantom monitors” but so far the fixes provided there are not working either.

Konsole did not recognize the “inxi” command.
