I experienced my laptop crashed then shutdown unexpectedly. It happened several times when I had been using Skype for Linux. Then today it happened several time again when I was converting *.mov video to mp4 using ffmpeg.
Could this be due to exessive heat? Maybe monitor temperatures (lm_sensors from package lm-sensors) and see if that could be the cause of sudden shutdowns.
In Fedora 31, there should have abrt running, trying to get at least the program that was running and the address (IP register) where it happens. It normally propose to send the memory dump on a server to find the source code of the crash, and if that does not works it propose to do the job on your own computer, downloading the necessary debug packages. It then try to find duplicates on Red Hat Bugzilla, if none is found create one… Does this have happened? If I run “abrt” on my own computer, it shows this: [root@localhost loader]# abrt
b263858 1x python-argcomplete 2020-04-04 11:12:20
a893674 1x dnfdragora 2020-04-08 19:01:06
f8cf2df 1x trackballs 2020-04-08 19:22:47
[root@localhost loader]#
which shows the program name that “crashed”.
“abrt list” give a little bit more information.
gnome-abrt is the graphical version of this, where the work I spoke beofre happens.
Well, if this is hang rather than crash… then I admit there is normally about not much information collected.
Florian, thanks. I installed lm_sensors and use it to monitor Core temperature. It seemed when processing/converting video Core temperature increased up to 87 degree C. I terminated the process because it kept increasing. So I need to find ways to cooling down my laptop.
I would say so. How old is the machine? It could also be that the heat sink is a little loose, which could result in a decreased heat transfer from the CPU to the heat sink. You have to disassemble the thing and take a look…
