FC44: Problem with link_power_management_policy type med_power_with_dipm on WD Gold HDD

Hi,

I’ve recently acquired a WD Gold HDD, since then I’m experiencing a behavior I’ve never seen before with other HDD disks, even my old WD Blue.

Sometimes, the machine freezes for several seconds, then the disk starts writing or reading or whatever since it produces lots of noise, then the machine unfreezes.

the dmesg shows every time those entries :

[ 795.544751] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x10000000 SErr 0x50000 action 0x6 frozen
[ 795.544761] ata1: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake }
[ 795.544766] ata1.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED
[ 795.544767] ata1.00: cmd 61/38:e0:e8:cb:4a/00:00:80:00:00/40 tag 28 ncq dma 28672 out
res 40/00:01:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
[ 795.544773] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }

I’ve already changed the SATA cable twice, the smarctl command does not show anything abnormal.

Searching here and there and using chatbots, it seems to me it is sleep/wakeup problem.

The chatbots suggested to change link_power_management_policy from med_power_with_dipm to max_performance.

And it seems working, so the next phase is to persist the configuration.

I’ve tried GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“rhgb quiet ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1” but it did not work.

Then I tried udev rule

cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-sata-max-perf.rules
ACTION==“add|change”, SUBSYSTEM==“scsi_host”, KERNEL==“host*”, ATTR{link_power_management_policy}=“max_performance”

When I execute “udevadm trriger“ it works, but not after reboot.

So it seems that something else is resetting the parameter, maybe tuned.

Could help?

Regards.

Please provide the model of the drive (output of sudo fdisk -l)

The errors you report seem to indicate a possible drive issue and if it is brand new I would suggest an RMA. If not new then it is possibly failing and maybe should be replaced.

Your indication of possible power management issues could also be relevant, but I don’t know the exact fix. My Seagate drives have never had that issue

Hi,

This is the output of smartctl.

As I said, changing the link_power_management_policy from med_power_with_dipm to max_performance, seems to resolve the problem.

I don’t know how to make it persistent across reboot. I am doing it manually on each boot/reboot.

I will execute a full smart test a see the results.

Regards.

I edited your post and removed the block quote " tags and added the preformatted text </> tags so it is shown exactly as you saw it on screen.

I see nothing of concern in that smartctl output.

It should be possible to write a script to perform the steps you are doing manually then it could run at boot time and make that setting for you.
