I have a Dell G15 5530 running Fedora 42 KDE. After updating to the new kernel “kernel-6.17.6-200.fc42” when the laptop boots, the fans go nuts. They do not stop going at maximum speed for the entire duration of the laptop being on. Selecting the previous kernel 6.17.5 in the boot menu fixes the issue. I was just wondering if this is known and will be fixed, or is there maybe something I should do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I believe it’s a kernel issue. I’m on CachyOS (Arch based) and got the same problem on 6.17.6 and 6.17.7 with the G15 5530. I’m using the LTS version now.
I’ve run some tests and gathered some information about this issue. There’s a new kernel implementation related to “G-mode” on the Dell G15 5530. It seems that kernel version 6.17.6 automatically enables this mode on boot.
I installed the AWCC app (GitHub - tr1xem/AWCC: An unofficial alternative to Alienware Command Centre of Windows for the Dell G series on linux), which shows that the computer is indeed in G-mode after startup. Pressing G (F9) switches the system to performance mode, and the fans return to their normal speed.
To fix this issue in this kernel, I added the command awcc performance -v & to a startup script. This prevents the fans from running at high speed when the system boots.
That seems to work for me, thanks so much!
