Announced

This is a proposed Change for Fedora Linux.
This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee.

Summary :open_book:

Replace the nwg-shell with Dank Material Shell (built on QuickShell) for the Fedora MiracleWM spin.

Owner :open_book:

  • Name: [[User:mattkae| Matthew Kosarek]], [[User:ngompa| Neal Gompa]]
  • Email: matthew@matthewkosarek.xyz, ngompa13@gmail.com

Detailed Description :open_book:

This Change involves packaging the [https://danklinux.com/ Dank Material Shell] overlay to [https://quickshell.org/ QuickShell] and updating {{package|miracle-wm-config}} so the default shell for new installs uses it.

Feedback :open_book:

Benefit to Fedora :open_book:

The nwg-shell experience has been difficult to maintain and stabilize for MiracleWM, with updates subtly breaking the experience on a regular basis. Switching to a QuickShell-based experience will give us a higher quality UX that has better stability as it is updated and maintained as part of the spin.

Scope :open_book:

  • Proposal owners:
    ** Package DankMaterialShell
** Update {{package|miracle-wm-config}} to ship configuration to activate DMS as the shell
  • Other developers: N/A
  • Release engineering: [Making sure you're not a bot! #13167]
  • Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change)
  • Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)
  • Alignment with the Fedora Strategy: No

Upgrade/compatibility impact :open_book:

Existing systems will retain the nwg-shell configuration unless they purge their configuration and relogin, which will trigger MiracleWM’s behavior to instantiate the user settings. They will get DMS in that scenario.

Early Testing (Optional) :open_book:

N/A

How To Test :open_book:

Once everything is packaged, grabbing a new Fedora MiracleWM Rawhide ISO, installing it, and trying to interact with the system is sufficient for testing.

User Experience :open_book:

This will be a drastic user experience change, as swapping from nwg-shell to DMS will be a huge upgrade. Aside from switching from GTK3 to Qt6+Qt Quick, the shell will more correctly integrate with MiracleWM’s IPC and more features will work properly (e.g. workspaces, resolution selection, etc.).

Dependencies :open_book:

  • DankMaterialShell (not yet packaged)
  • {{package|quickshell}}
  • {{package|miracle-wm-config}}

Contingency Plan :open_book:

  • Contingency mechanism: Revert back to nwg-shell configuration and defer to the next release.
  • Contingency deadline: Final Freeze
  • Blocks release? No

Documentation :open_book:

Release Notes :open_book:

The Fedora MiracleWM spin has switched its default experience from nwg-shell to DankMaterialShell (built on QuickShell). Users should experience a more fully featured, reliable, snappier, and polished experience.

If you are in favor but have reservations, or are opposed but something could change your mind, please explain in a reply.

We want everyone to be heard, but many posts repeating the same thing actually makes that harder. If you have something new to say, please say it. If, instead, you find someone has already covered what you’d like to express, please simply give that post a  instead of reiterating. You can even do this by email, by replying with the heart emoji or just “+1”. This will make long topics easier to follow.

Please note that this is an advisory “straw poll” meant to gauge sentiment. It isn’t a vote or a scientific survey. See About the Change Proposals category for more about the Change Process and moderation policy.

This change proposal has now been submitted to FESCo with ticket #3552 for voting.
