F40 - Blank screen after suspend, but system is running (no NVIDIA "anymore")

Hi all

After a decade of absence, I am back on Fedora. I almost love it, if it was not for this pesky bug that ruins everything. Any ideas?

Symptoms:

  • After system goes into suspend mode (either forced or automatic), and gets woken up, there is no video signal, i.e. black screen (and monitor says “no video”)
  • System is running however. I can hear notifications come in on the fly
  • tty2 is not accessible/visible
  • Only known way to escape is a hard reset via power button

System Info (neofetch):

Setup Notes:

  • Fedora was installed on a dual boot nvme drive (PopOS is the other system)
  • Fedora partition was formatted as btrfs
  • during install, NVIDIA RTX 2060 was present and the main card
  • after install I physically removed the card and purged all nvidia packages. Funny enough, this black-screen-suspend issue would only occasionally occur with the NVIDIA card. So suspend would work well for 2-5 wakes, but then it would show the same behavior. Now, without the card, it’s a constant issue.

Any progress on this? I seem to be having what seems to be the same issue.

Not even a little bit. Since the post I have tried out Ubuntu 22.04, 23.10, PopOS (all of which were confirmed to work with the NVIDIA GPU before) and Debian 12.5 (hoping an older kernel would maybe be better).
Nothing. Not in dmesg, not in Journalctl (I mean there are errors, but they shouldnt relate to this at all, since the resume is completed). My best guess is that it is an unlucky combo of the Intel UHD 750 and something in the kernel. What further supports this idea is that the onboard graphics dont accept a 2nd input - so something is definitely off there.

I have given up and ordered an AMD RX 550 for 50 EUR/USD. Should work hopefully, given the native kernel support for AMD.

Not sure if this is feasible or helpful, but I can now confirm the new GPU did the trick.

I have similar issues here, but I also have this problem when trying to turn my laptop on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t turn the screen on. But external monitors are still working…

This might be related

As a workaround, you might want to try this GNOME extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1414/unblank/ - it worked for me.

@hirnidrin @raylok

Unless you also installed with NVIDIA and then removed the card and uninstalled the packages, you all have different issues.

I can move your comments somewhere else

Please specify when it happens and remove unneeded tags, like “server”.

Normally if you remove the GPU that was used and all the packages, the configs would still use it and you would have a TTY or something.

I guess you also needed to change some setting to switch to internal GPU.

Please give us that file, as depending on how the driver is loaded, that may be an issue.
