F36 extreme laggy (open start menu, switch programs), keyboard problems

,

Hello,

on my laptop (Thinkpad T520, Core i5, 8GB) Fedora/KDE is running very stable, responsive and reliable since several years.

Since updating to F36 a few days ago, it is no longer fun to work with it.

The following slight errors occur:

  • Hardware volume keys and microphone key don’t work anymore
  • Windows button on the keyboard does not open the start menu
  • typing the name of a program in the start menu does not show it, although it is included in the menu

The following serious errors always occur 1x when the laptop was supend-to-disk or just locked:

  • opening the start menu after clicking the F-button takes min 30Sek
  • displaying the window of any program on the taskbar takes min 30Sek
  • there is also a long waiting time (12sec) during which no program opens when a Bluetooth output device is connected or disconnected.

In the waiting time in which nothing happens, the laptop is not busy, because

if Firefox was already open, new tabs are opened, web pages are displayed fast and video streaming is no problem.

I would be interested if others also have such problems and how I can get rid of them.

Thanks and many greetings

Hi @rowspan welcome to :Fedora when you have a minute please take a look at: Welcome to Ask Fedora! Please read me first!

Can you please provide some additional information:
inxi -Fzx in terminal and post the output as </> Preformatted text here.

And the output of the journal while the issues are occuring.

Thanks

This is the output of the journal when opening the start menu (which happened fast) and when clicking on shutdown, which took about 24 seconds.

Surprising discovery after logout and login again, opening the Start menu via windows button and the search for installed programs works again.

Bluetooth and Firefox

After further deeper investigation, I was able to determine a connection of Bluetooth and media playback (in FF).
Here is the journal when the Bluetooth speaker is connected, a movie is started on Netflix (FF 104.0.1), the laptop lid is closed (Sleep) and then opened again. In this state, switching between programs suddenly takes dozens of seconds. As does opening the Start menu or interacting with the widget in the system tray. Likewise, the Start menu does not open when the Windows key is pressed and the Start menu search no longer finds an installed program.

Cross-check with VLC

As a cross-check without FF (closed), media playback was performed once via Bluetooth over VLC. Again, the lid was closed (sleep). After reawakening, all functions in the Start menu were still intact and switching between programs was fast. But after maybe 1-2min, all errors still occurred just as they did when using FF. Only later.

I gave up and reinstalled the whole laptop with the F37 beta KDE Spin. And I am pleased. So far everything feels normal fast again.

What I noticed in the old, broken F36 was that the file /home/row/.local/share/kactivitymanagerd/resources/database-wal seemed very large at 12GB. In addition, MIDI had big timing problems, because it contained strong jitter when playing out to a hardware synthsizer that was connected via USB and enabled MIDI communication.

Testing different kernels did not change the problems. The last kernels that were installed from Fedora but also the kernels edge and rt (realtime) from xanmod were tested.

KDE was also completely uninstalled and reinstalled by using:

sudo dnf remove @kde-desktop
sudo dnf groupremove -y "KDE"

sudo dnf groupinstall "KDE Plasma Workspaces"
sudo dnf install @kde-desktop

I hope this helps someone else.
Best Regards
