Hi and welcome to :fedora: !

With dnf5, the command should be dnf list --installed, since dnf5 is not as permissive as dnf4 and also searches for the package called installed.

Can you run again dnf list --installed \*nvidia\* and rpm -qa \*nvidia\*. It looks as if you have installed NVIDIA v.550, but not from the repos. Maybe installed from NVIDIA’s website?

Hello Mike and thank you.

dnf installed -

Installed packages
nvidia-gpu-firmware.noarch 20241210-1.fc41 updates

rpm -qa…

nvidia-gpu-firmware-20241210-1.fc41.noarch

I don’t think I installed it from the website. That might be. But I am using custom repo from https://asus-linux.org/ - I have an asus zephyrus. Mostly it’s been for smaller hardware specific issues like sound, bluetooth etc.

Did you use this guide specifically? It seems you’re using a custom kernel (6.12.9-202.rog.fc41.x86_64). This forum won’t be able to provide enough help on issues related to custom kernels.

I would try to find out why is it that you can’t find an nvidia package installed, even though the driver is loaded. Please post the output of dnf repolist and grep -i exclude /etc/yum.repos.d/*.

When posting the output, please also include the command, and format each output as preformatted text, using the </> button.

555.x is an older version of the NVIDIA driver, and newer drivers might fix your issue. I would remove the existing driver and install the current drivers from the RPMFusion. But given that it doesn’t seem to be provided by an RPM package, it might be more difficult. Other forum users having NVIDIA drivers might join the conversation and support in this regard.

You have apparently installed an nvidia driver from some source other than rpmfusion (likely directly from nvidia.com using the .run file)

That driver version is old enough that it probably does not support that RTX 4070 gpu properly and thus is unable to provide full functionality.

My suggestion:

  1. remove the currently installed nvidia driver. If it was installed using nvidia’s .run file then it usually can be removed the same way sudo /path/to/.run-file uninstall or similar.
  2. install the current nvidia driver from the rpmfusion repo using sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda Instructions showing this are at Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion
Make certain you wait at least 5 minutes after that completes before rebooting.

When done you should have full function on that 4070 GPU and the driver installed should be version 565.77

I did use that guide so I’m assuming I sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda. Although I really can’t remember now and I’m not finding a .run-file anywhere. So should I just see if dnf will take it out?

Installing the NVIDIA packages via dnf normally should have updated them whenever you ran a dnf upgrade command. Version 550.x cannot be found in the RPMFusion F41 repos anymore.

Please check and post the output of:

  • dnf list --installed \*nvidia\*
  • rpm -qa \*nvidia\*
  • dnf repolist
  • dnf repolist --disabled
  • grep -i exclude /etc/yum.repo*/*
  • sudo find / -iname *nvidia*.run 2>/dev/null (just in case the first two commands didn’t find anything).

Your earlier listing from dnf list --installed \*nvidia\* did not show any nvidia packages installed as rpms. Your output from inxi showed that you have an nvidia driver in use.

It would not benefit to try removal of the old driver using dnf since the rpm packages are not installed.

To remove the older driver you will have to either find the original file used to do the installation, (which can often be done with sudo find / -name \*nvidia\* or sudo find / -name \*.run,) and remove that driver or manually go in and locate all the related files and remove them.

The command modinfo nvidia may give info that can assist as well.

This is all I get

$ sudo find / -name \*.run
find: ‘/run/user/1000/doc’: Permission denied

Ok
However you managed to install the nvidia driver that shows in your inxi output from the first post it should be removed.

The guide you referenced leads to this Linux for ROG Notebooks (as noted by Mike above) and suggests installing the drivers from rpmfusion, but since the dnf list command does not show any rpm packages for nvidia installed it seems you chose some other way to perform the installation.

You really need to identify how those drivers were installed so they can be removed cleanly and we do not wind up with conflicts or difficult to identify interactions later.

Please show the command used as well as the full results when posting here so it is easier to track what is happening.

One thing that may assist, should it become necessary to manually remove those drivers, would be to run dnf list --installed dkms. If that shows the dkms package installed then remove it with sudo dnf remove dkms.

This would prevent dkms from overwriting and conflicting with the packages installed from rpmfusion.

To fully remove the compiled portion of the existing drivers run ls /usr/lib/modules/6.12.10-200.fc41.x86_64/extra/ and verify it contains a subdirectory named nvidia or similar. If it does then run sudo rm -r /usr/lib/modules/6.12.10-200.fc41.x86_64/DIRNAME (where DIRNAME would be the directory identified by the ls command)
(NOTE – the full path may be different since your output shows you are using the 6.12.9-202.rog.fc41.x86_64 kernel and not the standard fedora kernel)
Also note that you were asked to provide the output of dnf repolist and that has not been seen yet.

Using any kernel other than the standard fedora kernel does impact our ability to assist in some issues.

No, download the run file from NVIDIA (if that is how you installed the driver) and run it with that argument

Remove all parts of the driver the good way.

Dont follow Windows habits, installing stuff from websites.

Always use repos. Add the rpmfusion packages, install the driver from there

Honestly I don’t believe I installed them from the site. I was changing jobs and lots of stuff was going so who knows.

I don’t want you to blow anything away. Note that I said your path might be different since you have a different kernel.

What is preferable is to find how you installed the nvidia drivers and uninstall them properly.

One option would be to see what is located under the path /usr/lib/modules/6.12.9-202.rog.fc41.x86_64/ that may be nvidia related then manually remove that, but that would be done ONLY if you cannot find the way the nvidia drivers were initially installed.

To me it appears that you may have downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-550.120.run file and used that to install the drivers.
Note: that particular driver file is on the nvidia site at Driver Details | NVIDIA.

If that is how the driver was installed then it can be properly removed by downloading the file again then from the directory where it is located run
sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-550.120.run --uninstall
NOTE: I am guessing here since you cannot confirm that is the way the driver was installed, but it does seem likely.

Only after the older driver has been successfully uninstalled, continue by installing the current nvidia drivers from rpmfusion with sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda.

Wait at least 5 minutes then reboot to load the new drivers.

I will note one additional fact.
You are only using the 6.11.9 kernel (which is equivalent to the last kernel used on f39)
I cannot say for certain that the newest nvidia drivers (565.77) will function properly on the 6.11 kernel. They do work extremely well with the 6.12 kernel used in both f40 and f41.

I don’t see anything:

I vaguely remember going to the NVIDIA site but I just don’t think I would have installed it that way. Especially since the asus linux site was basically providing guidance on how to get all their hardware to work with Fedora. There were some other issues initially and additional directions in their discord, so I was more concerned with getting all that included vs what came from where. Everything was working fine until the last update.

I ran the script it says the uninstall was successful

I guess what I want to know is why is the external monitor detected if I boot into the 6.11 kernel?

Try that with
ls /usr/lib/modules/6.12.9-202.rog.fc41.x86_64/extra
(you do not need sudo with that command.)
It is intended that a user think a little and extrapolate from earlier suggestions.

This means exactly what it says in or under that directory.

I think this is an issue with the kernel you are using. Since it is not a fedora kernel I really cannot assist any more.
If you were to install the fedora kernel then reboot things might be different.

I would suggest that the possibility exists the rog kernel may have been altered enough that the latest nvidia driver does not properly function.

I have an Asus ROG laptop and have never used anything but plain fedora packages and it has always worked perfectly for me.

You would need to remove that exclude in order to install the fedora kernel (even if only for testing)

Yes, looks like it’s unrelated to f41. I did a fresh install and the external monitor is working. Sorry for wasting your time. Thank you for the assistance.

Hi

I bought the same notebook. How were you able to install Fedora? What problem are you struggling with?

Thank you very much.
