External monitor keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on fresh install after nvidia drivers install

I think the real problem was the default refresh rate, which is stored in the monitor’s EDID table as the preferred resolution (FHD@144Hz).

I’ve seen other LG FHD displays doing the same and causing issues.
The more conservative way would be an EDID table with FHD@60Hz as the preferred resolution. This causes fewer problems and the user can change the refresh rate manually.

Nvidia drivers seem to be problematic driving higher refresh rates with HDMI ports. It is interesting that the nouveau kernel driver had no problems here

I guess it’s worth a try to upgrade to 575.57.

Sorry, I don’t get what it means to have EDID at FHD@60Hz and the user to change manually, does it mean i can make it seem it’s at 60Hz but use more?
I did upgrade to 575.57 and it works just fine on 120Hz, it was the hdmi port all along. Though, i’ve tested some games and every single game that does not have a setting for refresh rate will not use 120Hz but 60Hz as the default and I can see that by enabling vsync and having 60fps only. (external monitor only, if i go laptop screen only it’s working just fine)

EDID table

The EDID table helps the system to identify and configure the monitor ( supported resolutions and refresh rates, etc ).

games: are you sure they use the NVIDIA gpu?

Yes, I use the nvidia gpu. I installed a lot of random games to test if they all have that issue with 60hz and they do not, that happened only to the three that I had installed before and I managed to solve two of them just by going borderless windowed instead of fullscreen. Thanks so much for all the help!
