External monitor has no signal on a dual graphics card laptop

Hello everyone, today I connected a monitor to my notebook, but it’s not working properly.
My system is Fedora 41, kernel version 6.12.11-200.fc41.x86_64. I installed the NVIDIA driver version 565.77 following the guide at https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA.
The issues with the monitor are:

  • The monitor is detected in GNOME Settings, but there’s no signal on the monitor.
  • When I roll back to an older kernel, the NVIDIA driver fails to work properly, but the external monitor displays normally.

How can I resolve this issue? Any help is appreciated.
Below I’ll provide some additional information:

The system detects that something is connected to the RTX 400 HDMI port, but it is “off”. Are you using a docking station? If you unplug the HDMI cable and reconnect does the monitor come on?

My Dell systems have had multiple firmware updates since 2023, so you should check for updates from your vendor. Intel is working on new drivers for Iris Xe Graphics. Have a look at the Arch Linux on testing the new experimental Xe driver.

Thank you for your reply. I am using the HDMI port on my laptop to connect to an external monitor. I just tried unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable, and strangely, the external monitor suddenly flickers with a normal image before turning to a black screen, and ultimately still shows no signal.
My UEFI system is also the latest version.

You may get more details by running journalctl --nohostname -b --follow in a terminal while unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable.

I ran the command below and unplugged/replugged the HDMI cable.
Line 2 shows the output after disconnecting HDMI, and Line 3 shows the output after reconnecting it.
I don’t understand what these outputs mean, but they do provide new clues. I’ll search for related information. Thank you very much.

I tried rolling back to 6.11 kernel and manually installing the older Nvidia drivers as well as the latest test drivers following the guide at https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2015/fedora-nvidia-guide/, but the no signal issue remains unchanged.

On fedora it is usually seen and understood that installing the nvidia drivers from (or following the instructions from) INTTF usually results in less than desirable results.

My suggestion, as always, is to cleanly remove everything installed in that way then follow the instructions at Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion as it seems you may have done initially.

First lets see exactly what is installed right now with dnf list --installed \*nvidia\* and the harware with inxi -Fzxx. Include lsmod | grep nvidia in that response.

Once we see that information as a starting point we should be able to attack the cause.

Your earlier post showed those command results, but now you have changed things a bit.

Thank you for your response. Yesterday, I performed a complete system reinstallation. When I did not install the RPM Fusion drivers, the external monitor worked normally, and I obtained the following output:
