Is there any safe way to try Plasma DE without reinstalling my OS? I’m using Fedora 41 with GNOME as my daily OS. I’d like to try out Plasma, but without reinstalling entire OS and lost my settings. Are there any other ways than virtual machine to try it out?
The safest and easiest the option to download the Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 41 ISO and boot into a live session.
There are other options too, but I would only recommend them if the above doesn’t provide the expected experience.
I think the virtual machine option works really well. Just download the KDE Plasma iso, start Boxes and load up the ISO.
To install KDE Plasma Alongside with GNOME Use sudo dnf install @kde-desktop
While it’s technically possible to install both in parallel this is perhaps not the safest way to try out KDE or Gnome. They are the two largest desktop environments and each will install multiple gigabytes of software that will partly overlap in scope and function. It could lead to potential configuration conflicts or issues with upgrades along the way, which could be difficult to debug.
