Dual Boot - Directly boots to windows, Fedora KDE not recognized

Hey,

I got a Problem and need help as I am new to Linux. (and no IT professionial). I try to describe it shortly and would be very thankful for some help!

  1. Problem: I Installed the recent Fedora KDE Plasma in a Dual Boot with Windows 11. It worked perfectly fine for one day. When I start my Laptop now it boots directly into windows and I can not choose Linux anymore. It seems to me that some entries are missing but I do not understand what exactly is wrong.
  2. Goal: I want to restore the boot menu so I can choose between Fedora and Windows at startup.
  3. Things I tried: I tried to run Boot-Repair with an Ubuntu Live Image. It suggested no automatic repair. As I do not really understand what the exact problem is, I did not want to mess with the terminal in order to not break things even more. (I looked into documentation and quite a few videos on the topic, but did not manage to finde one, which seems to match my exact situation.) Secure Boot is disabled at the moment.
  4. What happend before the problem: Nothing? Just at one point when I switched my Laptop on again a blue screen with some options showed. I was irritated so I switched it of again and afterwards the dual boot options were gone. I did not update any of the two OS prior.

Thanks in advance for any help!

This ist the output of the Boot-Repair Programm:

Suggested repair: ______________________________________________________________

The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would not act on the MBR.
Additional repair would be performed: win-legacy-basic-fix

Do you have good backups of all your important data?

Not a dual-booting expert, haven’t done that in decades but the boot info script may contain some clues.

OS#1 (windows): Windows 10 or 11 on nvme0n1p3

Your Fedora install on nvme0n1p9 (I assume) is apparently not being recognized even though GRUB files are on nvme0n1p1

If it were me, I would boot with a LiveUSB and take a look first if there are any files at all on nvme0n1p9

Hopefully, someone else can come along and offer more suggestions.

Yes, I have good back-ups. (But would prefer not test out how good they really are;))

I took a look at nvme0n1p9 and the Fedora System and everything I installed so far seems to be still there.

Thank you!

On a Windows/Fedora dual boot, this should contain an /efi/fedora directory, and no /efi/ubuntu. It looks like the Ubuntu “boot repair” might have installed an Ubuntu bootloader, so it’s probably not the right tool to repair a Fedora install.

A good next step would be to use the instructions here to reinstall Fedora’s GRUB from a Fedora live USB:

(For your install, you would follow the BTRFS steps and not the LVM steps.)

Eventually you should also remove the Ubuntu bootloader, but you can probably deal with that after getting Fedora working.

Thanks a lot! Yes, I already wondered where the ubuntu entry came from. I will try to get rid of it afterwards if necessary.

I will look into the instruction and try to work it out.

Windows default is hybernation, aka fastboot. If you run Windows without disabling fastboot, the next boot goes into Windows.

I tried disabling fastboot now, but nothing changed. There is still no menu and Windows boots.

What was the sequence of events? I gather you installed Fedora and booted it, then booted Windows. Did you install updates in Windows? Here, Windows updates on 2 dual boot systems with fastboot disabled messed up the UEFI entries for Fedora, and one update reformatted an external drive I forgot to disconnect. The only reason I had Windows was to investigate problematic PDF’s, so it wasn’t worth keeping Windows.

From Windows there is a “system recovery” page with an option to boot from USB. You should be able to boot a Fedora Live USB from that to a) check that your Fedora partitions are intact, and b) run efibootmgr in a terminal to see the boot entries. You can post the output (as pre-formatted text) from the Live environment.

We have the efibootmgr output from what was already posted:

Using the “Restoring the bootloader using the Live disk” instructions posted above should take care both of recreating the Fedora files in the EFI partition, and of adding back the efibootmgr entry for Fedora.

Yes, i installed linux additionally to an existing Windows OS. I think booting windows might have caused the problem in the first place, but I did not update anything in any of the two OS. I will try the fix suggested above and will report back, wether it worked (probably tomorrow). Thanks for your help.

(Unfortunatly I need to keep Windows as I need a reliable Computer and everytime I tried to step a foot into Linux so far it ended very quickly in heavy disfunctions.)
