My laptop’s screen is pitch white (unusable) after I have set something wrong in Accessibility Zoom. I have previously unset Alt + Super + 8 and thus it has no effect. How can I restore the screen to the state where I can see it?
Rebooting keeps the accessibility settings. Alt + Super + 8 does nothing and there is no alternative bind (or I don’t remember what I’ve set it to).
Fedora 39. Cannot list more specific details as the screen is unusable.
Fedora 39 has been EOL for over a year and is receiving no new support. Very few users have an EOL release version in use.
I would suggest that since you seem to have set something incorrectly that it may be easiest to just do a reinstall of a currently supported fedora version (f42 or f43).
The live installation media should allow you to recover and backup anything that you wish to keep before reinstalling.
I’m assuming it turns white only after logging on?
If so, and you’re using GNOME, switch to virtual console #3 using the key combo [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F3] (Fedora uses #1 for the desktop environment).
Log on with your usual credentials, then issue the following command to disable the magnifier/zoom:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-magnifier-enabled false
(fyi… over 1,000 of GNOME’s settings can be configured via command-line.)
Although it’s also possible to end a running desktop session from a command-line, it’s simpler to just reboot.
Afterwards, if at all possible, definitely should upgrade to a newer Fedora release because unless you’re using a web browser via Flatpak, the Firefox and Chromium packages from the F39 repo are really outdated and insecure.
