This weekend, I wanted to try out Kinoite on my system; however, the SDDM does not start up. The installer installs successfully (without any errors) and the OS boots successfully; however, the SDDM does not start up and the only thing that I was able to see was a black screen without any cursor or sound. Has anyone else had this issue or has anyone had tested the ISO? Because I have then tried the install with other configurations and all have failed, yet SilverBlue installs just fine.
I was able to install Kinoite successfully with no issues. Did you verify the ISO by chance?
If your doing a bare metal install I would also verify the drive’s integrity. Maybe as I do sometimes delete the drive partition, format and then reboot. Your decision. More details as to your bios and previous installs with perhaps using encryption.
Do you have an and GPU ? There was an issue with SDDM not starting on AMD GPUs.
It is strange. I do not have a dedicated GPU; but, do have AMD integrated graphics.
Here is a the hardware specs:

I am using Fedora 43 KDE and had not had this issues before, only Kinoite broke like this.
That looks strange. I guess that partition (474 GiB encrypted) is intended to have your / and /home, but the description “EFI partition” is concerning.
Can you remember what filesystem type you selected for this partition? The default should have been btrfs.
I did go with the default partition setup and KDE partition manager shows that I have a btrfs with luks as my root. May it be a problem with lshw?
Here is the partition scheme from fdisk -l:

Ah, that looks ok then. It could be a problem with lshw like you say.
Okay, I guess it works for others which is strange. I can use Fedora 43 KDE on the same laptop with the same configuration and have not seen this SDDM issue. What can I do to make this work on my system?
Again, I would suggest using GParted and delete your partition and then format.
I have seen this before. But as I said, your choice.
Oh yes, sorry, I forgot to address your suggestion. When it did not worked the first time, I did boot with rescue mode and run “nvme format /dev/nvme0n1“ and rebooted back to the installer again and tried it out, and, it led to the same issue. Again sorry to not mention this on my previous posts.
That’s not what I suggested. If you downloaded Gparted and created a usb for it and booted to it, then you could follow my suggestion. Best of Luck.
Alright, this time, I have prepared a ventoy with gparted, fedora kde and fedora kinoite. Then booted to gparted, removed all partitions from the drive and re-formatted with gpt. Booted back to kinoite and installed it. Tried to boot then got the same issue again, hence had to switch to fedora kde. Are there any other suggestions.
Note: I have verified all isos with the given instructions from their distributors. I have also disabled Secure Boot in the process so that it would not interfere with anything.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for how can I make Kinoite work on my OS. I really want to try out Atomic/Immutable distros; but, need KDE for accessibility reasons.
Are there any alternatives that I can try if this one will not work?
In my experience sometimes Ventoy causes problems. Always better to use a single usb. Anyway, if Kinoite won’t worh, why not try Silverblue? As to your issue, don’t have a clue, sorry!
My issue with SilverBlue primarily stems from Gnome. Unfortunately, despite advertising an easy to use desktop, Gnome has one of the WORST screen magnifiers that I have ever seen. And I do need a screen magnifier to operate a machine in the long run. I wanted to ask whether are there any other alternatives of Immutable Distros with KDE, which is either supported by the Fedora community or has a good community behind it?
There are others although I can’t recommend them. Did you try what I suggested?
If you are referring to trying it without Ventoy, no I need a lot of time and 3 USBs to try it since I am trying it on my primary system. If you are referring to SilverBlue, I did try it on my initial try for Kinoite and SilverBlue does work; but, not Kinoite despite them having the same configuration.
Finally, I had a moment of inspiration and have installed from Fedora 42 Kinoite and upgraded it to 43 and it continued to work after the upgrade. My assumption is that there is something wrong with the packaging of SDDM for KDE 6.4.5 (at least on my end). I believe that it will be fixed with Fedora 44; but, wanted to leave the solution here in case someone has the same issue.
(I do not want to use Kinoite anymore, it was more trouble than it was worth)
