Data deleted despite not formatting on Fedora 42

i changed distro from popos to fedore 42. i kept /home partition as mount and formatted rest of them but after installation all of the data was gone. I instantly shut it down and booted into Windows 11 on another drive to check using TestDisk. But all the content was replaced by empty folders.

Is this a bug or is this user error?

I am not able to help you on the reason why it was removed, but I think you didn’t get your data back because Windows cannot read Linux disks. You may want to try again with a linux distro and testdisk or Photorec (it is what I have used several times in cases like this).

Hopefully you can get your data back.

i also tried using live usb but no luck. Fortunately i backup all dotfiles, ssh keys and such and I have 2-3 months old backup of important files.

I just hope this is investigated if it’s indeed an user error

Without a bug report it’s not likely that anyone with investigate.
