COSMIC applications have severe rendering corruption on AMD TURKS/radeon

Problem

After installing recent Fedora 44 updates, some COSMIC applications may display severe graphical corruption on older AMD Radeon GPUs using the legacy radeon kernel driver. Affected applications include Cosmic Store, Cosmic Files, Cosmic Terminal, and possibly others.

Reported symptoms include graphical artifacts, overlapping or incorrectly rendered interface elements, and windows that are difficult to use.

The confirmed affected hardware is an AMD TURKS GPU, such as Radeon HD 7550M, 7570M, or 7650M, using the legacy radeon kernel driver. GNOME Terminal and KDE’s Konsole render correctly on the same system.

Cause

Not yet known.

Workarounds

  1. Launch affected applications with software rendering enabled. For example, for COSMIC Store, run:

    LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 cosmic-store

    This makes COSMIC Store render correctly on the affected system, although software rendering may reduce graphical performance. The same environment variable can be used when launching other affected COSMIC applications from a terminal.

  2. For COSMIC Store specifically, downgrading to cosmic-store-1.0.9-1.fc44 also avoids the corruption. Be aware that a downgraded package may be upgraded again during the next system update unless its version is temporarily locked.
