Excellent. It would appear that zeroing the superblock did the trick, and that creating the partition in some other way may have caused a problem.

Now everything is up I am loving how simple CoreOS is as a home server… I have a single, simple yaml file that describes a bare-metal install of a server with 2 raid arrays plus other storage, which will start a docker-compose described list of containerised services… installed within minutes from scratch… so awesome!
