Constant Random system blackouts with no clear errors in journalctl

Hello everyone,
I have a Dell Precision 5550 with
With a 4k screen
Intel® Core™ i7-10875H × 16
Intel® UHD Graphics (CML GT2)
Quadro T2000 with Max-Q Design

And I have been experiencing blackouts sometimes immediately at login, especially during normal light use, and without fail at wake-up from sleep.

Suspiciously if I am on what it believe is called the gdm it can sleep and wake-up no problems and won’t ever blackout on that screen. It also sleeps perfectly in the tty.

Also it doesn’t crash in the live ISO but crashes immediately after installing even during the post install set-up.

I have tried it with all gnome extensions disabled and that doesn’t change anything

By Blacks outs I mean:
System just goes Black, screen and keyboard go off and then it lights up again with the Dell logo and boots up like normal with a disabled USB if it was plugged in at the time.

I have tried reinstalling fedora and the drivers multiple times even tried the nvidia-open ones to no effect.

Please help me, I now dread using my laptop because I know that it will without fail crash at any point

Prime suspects would include running out of mass storage space or bad RAM. Side effects of crashes include data ending up in lost+found folders and crash reports/dumps.

I’m not sure how useful inxi disk usage stats are for btrfs —
you can check against btrfs fi usage / to see the full breakdown.

I ran a thorough memory test and these are the results from Dell diagnostic I also tried memtest a few days ago it also came back with nothing.

I don’t know how I messed up but while partitioning to try to see if this problem also exits in windows I ate at my fedora install so it broke.

I’ll try I quickly get it back running in the meantime can we safely say memory isn’t the issue? (Thinking about Dead 32gb ram in this current market makes me want to cry)

I ate at it so badly it doesn’t even mount in the live USB :sob:, I swear the kde partition manager is Russian roulette. I have been using the gnome one since 2023 and never messed up to the point of the drive failing to mount.

Why was I using the kde one? It was part of my attempt to rule out GNOME+Wayland+Nvidia potential issues hence the kde install and then wanted to try windows while I’m at it.

Managed to reinstall and it would also blackout in the live ISO but installing it in the troubleshooting option with limited graphics makes it stable.

So could this be a graphics card issue?

Update that installation to the latest version of everything.

If the reboots continue, wait until it happens again and post the output from journalctl -b -1 --no-hostname --no-pager | tail -n 50 immediately after it reboots. That command will show the last 50 lines of what happened on your machine immediately before the spontaneous reboot; hopefully it’ll give us a clue to what the root cause is.

Okay so with the help from rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA I have now installed the graphics drivers (I updated everything before this ) and it has switched back to hardware rendering and the cards are now showing.

Much better. Accelerated graphics now.

You can just take a screenshot using the gnome screenshot software (whatever it’s called); no need to take photographs and then upload them.

Try to avoid screenshots as a rule of thumb though - they aren’t searchable, can’t be easily quoted or copy/pasted, screen readers can’t do anything at all with them and so on.

You can see from here that the previous boot is waaay to short and thats because after the first blackout and reboot it then immediately blacked again on the next login

Can you post the out from journalctl -b -2 -p 1..3 --no-pager --no-hostname

There’s a chance that whatever is causing this is causing a hard reset so that the journal is never flushed, and we’ll never get to see the messages that we’d like to, but doesn’t hurt to look.

That was my fear. The “good” news is that it’s spitting out a lot of errors - I’d expect something considerably smaller - on my machine I get 24 lines, 2300 characters so hopefully there’s a smoking gun in there.

journalctl -b -2 -p 1..3 --no-pager --no-hostname | fpaste and then post the URL it gives you back.

Gnome shell is crashing which is probably the cause of the black screen.

I see you have a Hybrid graphics configuration - the i915 and a T2000 Quadro; can you disable one of them (probably the i915 I’d guess) and use the other for a while to see if that helps.

In addition, and this might also be too long so pipe it to fpaste if necesary, can we see journalctl -b -2 -k --no-pager --no-hostname

As for the disabling the igpu part my Dell Precision bios has no option that allows me to disable either
