Combo 3.5mm jack can't be repurposed on Fedora KDE 44 (Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54)

Hello. I have a problem with a combo jack on my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54 laptop. One of the main reasons I still use Windows in dual-boot is the ability to repurpose it as a line (mic) in. On Fedora KDE 44, though, it’s always detected as headphones automatically, and no additional prompts are shown (like Realtek Audio Console does).

I tried to proceed with this instruction, but it didn’t impact anything.

Jack assignment is done in the Linux kernel, and I have not seen any userspace easy way to change it.

Hopefully there is and somebody can let us know.

Your use of the word “jack” and addition of the tag jack may be confusing people. The tag jack is for JACK Audio Connection Kit whereas it appears that you are asking for help about a jack or phone connector (audio).

I’m not familiar with Realtek Audio Console, but your microphone input might become visible and selectable if you switch to the “Pro Audio” profile for your combo jack. This can be selected in both the Audio Volume widget in the system tray or in the Sound section of System Settings.

Thank you! I’ve edited my post to clear this confusion.

What’s about the “Pro Audio” profile, for me, it shows three input devices: a completely silent one (-Pro), which could be my mic/line in, but it doesn’t capture any sound even when I connect the source that clearly has it[1]. The latter two (-Pro 6 & -Pro 7) are my built-in webcam stereo mic & the same mic, but with somehow compressed sound (maybe some sort of noise reduction, I’m not sure). None of these relies on a combo jack in any way.

Also to mention, the recent topic tells about an issue similar in general, but completely different in detail: this person couldn’t plug headphones in and have them recognized, whereas for me, it’s the missing repurposing functionality for the 3.5mm jack. Anything I connect using it is recognized as headphones, even devices intended for audio input, not output, and I can’t repurpose it on my laptop manually.
