Chuwi hi 10x sound issues

Hi, I started using fedora a few months ago, I used it because I got a windows tablet Chuwi hi 10x.
Everything works as supposed on windows but it is slow af.
To make the tablet usable I tried to get Linux and chrome os to work with it. They all had the several issues hardware lacking drivers, but the one issue present on every distro was the lack of sound.
Fedora was the only distro where everything worked out of the box.
But it was short lived, after some weeks the sound disappeared and I would only get dummy output.

I installed windows again and stayed with it for a few months, but I never used the tablet because it’s just too slow, so I went back to fedora. I still get no sounds, only dummy output,but I can use Bluetooth headphones just fine.
The sound issue is well documented and was supposed to be fixed after kernel 6.0 but not really :slight_smile:

I followed all tutorials I could find and also looked for help with chat gpt but got no luck so far.

I got HDMI sound on settings instead of Dummy but still no sound on internal speakers.

reinstalled basically everything sound related, added my user to the sound group, checked for the hardware to see if its listed big list, but the conclusion was sry you are better just use the Bluetooth speakers

Iam not at all linux savvy but I can follow some simple instructions.

As said on the start, Linux Fedora was the only distro I got sound from the start. But it disappeared I guess after some upgrade and I had no backup-
The soundcard exists and it is working, the issue as to be some simple configuration Iam missing

Hello! I’m in the same situation as you, I can’t get the sound to work. It detects the card and I see the bar move to the beat of the sound, but I can’t hear it. I have tried 1000 things that I have found on the internet but I have not found a solution, the best is that it is heard very very softly, almost imperceptible. If you can listen very softly then you are in luck. There is a command note really sure if the name, probably alsamixer. It is one sound equalizer and you can raise all the siunds there

It is also possible to install pavucontrol and use that to manage the volume controls very precisely.

there was a time where pavucontrol would work for me by setting everything on maximum. But not anymore because all I get is dummy output (it used to work correctly but I had made no backup since it was a fresh Install my idea was if it stops working I just reinstall fedora) but a few months in probably due to some update it did stop detecting the sound card. reinstalling fedora did nothing my guess is it will always use last kernel

But Pavucontrol doesn’t work with PulseAudio? Forgive my ignorance, but the audio server in Fedora 38 is not Pipewire?

To be honest don’t really know what it comes with, but we can install it easy if doesn’t come with it

sudo dnf install pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-libs
sudo dnf reinstall pipewire wireplumber

Fedora does use pipewire & wireplumber. It also has the pipewire-pulseaudio package so the interface works with pavucontrol just as it did with pulseaudio before.

It is not recommended to use pulseaudio since that has been deprecated for some time and will not be actively supported on fedora in the future. Pipewire with wireplumber replaces it

Actually now my tablet does not detect the sound card at all, tried several fixes but couldn’t find anything that worked so I gave up on sound, it still runs much better than windows.

Did your fedora detect the soundcard when you first installed it?

By default Alsamixer had the first card that I show established, but with F6 I changed to the second and trying raising and lowering bars, when raising the one that says “DAC”, the volume increased, now it is listening!!!



That was exactly as I had it, but after some update the card disappeared. Make a full image just in case you need to get back to that point.

There probably is someway for me to figure out what is different between our OS but I have no clue how to do it on Linux :slight_smile: will try finding if there is some easy way to do it maybe I can finally get sound back :slight_smile:

I am confused, because I have connected a bluetooth headset and the sound has automatically changed to them, but when I disconnected them it has not been activated again in the speakers. It’s as if it didn’t work 100% right… Now I’ve noticed that when I restart the PC it goes back to the first card (the one with only one bar) and you have to be changing it manually. I have also seen that it is the “Speaker” section that mutes and activates the sound in the speakers, but the volume goes up and down in the first section that says “Headphone”… It’s all very strange…

Let’s see if I can do it…

My issue is sof-essx8336 is not detected or installed, it detects one soundcard (Intel Corporation Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio (rev 06)) but not on alsamixer neither on sound definitions only got dummy output. [if I had to bet would bet that hd audio is related with the hdmi]

It really sucks because it used to work just fine and I already reinstalled fedora fresh dozens of times and never worked again.

yep, same thing here, just used fedora because I read it would work on the tablet, and it did for a while. You really should create an image from everything fedora is worst than windows with updates they will always break something but a small price to pay for a much faster os :slight_smile:

Since chatgpt gets its answers from what is already on line it also may provide very outdated or misleading suggestions. Hopefully that will improve over time.

I really appreciate the selfless work behind most Linux projects. The problem with this is that there are many devices and, especially in these cheap ones, it is that they have different parts from each other, being the same model, from what I have read, ours in particular has at least 3 versions of sound card in it, same model named exactly the same, so it’s confusing. It seems that the maker put what they find in the drawers :person_shrugging:.
