Chromium-based browsers resolutions scaled way up in KDE Plasma

Greetings,

After a recent update, both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge appear enormous on the screen in KDE Plasma. All other apps appear as normal. If I switch to GNOME they also appear normal.

To be more specific, it’s as if someone took a magnifying glass to the UI on both browses when running under Plasma. The menus and toolbar are HUGE and one suddenly has to do a lot of scrolling on menus to see everything, where this wasn’t a problem previously.

My laptop’s screen is at full 1920x1080 resolution and 125% scaling like it has been for ages.

Again, this is only a problem in KDE Plasma. Under GNOME, both browsers appear normally when opened. I alternate between DEs, but I guess I’ll be sticking to GNOME till this problem gets fixed.

Navigate to the chrome://version URL and check the Command Line options.

Also check the output:

echo ${XDG_SESSION_TYPE} ${XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP}

EDIT: It appears to not affect the stable versions of both browsers. I was using the Dev (unstable) version. I’m not anymore.

TL;DR It seems to be an issue with Wayland in Plasma. I switched to X11 briefly and launched the browsers and they appeared normal.

chrome://version shows:

/usr/bin/google-chrome-unstable --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end

And I was in Wayland

$ echo ${XDG_SESSION_TYPE} ${XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP} wayland plasma
