Change Plymouth Bootscreen on Fedora Kinoite

None of the traditional solutions seem to work for changing the Plymouth boot screen - plymouth-set-default-theme and plymouth-kcm.

Hence, how do I change this on a Fedora Atomic distro like Kinoite?

You have to generate the initramfs locally.
Layering theme
rpm-ostree install plymouth-theme-breeze (replace breeze with whatever you like)

Then set it and enable local initramfs: sudo plymouth-set-default-theme breeze rpm-ostree initramfs --enable
If you want to revert the change.
rpm-ostree initramfs --disable

I remember trying that, it weirdly doesn’t seem to work? Did this work for you when you tried it; I can try doing it again if it worked for you.

yeah it did on my setup.
If you ran the commands but didn’t reboot in between installing the theme and setting it, or if the initramfs didn’t generate properly, it might not work.

figured out one possible reason it might not work, apparently “Charge” which shows up in Plymouth-kcm, doesn’t exist in plymouth-set-default-theme
So… I’ll try again?

Figured it out; it was because I was changing between:

  • Spinner (BGRT; BIOS contains no BGRT)
  • Spinner (“charge”; defaulted to BGRT as it doesn’t exist, thus is spinner instead)
  • Spinner (Spinner)
