For those of us in the northern hemisphere who work with a cat rescue, kitten season is in full swing, so…who are the cat lovers here and how many do you have?
Currently in my house there are FIFTEEN cats—eight are resident, seven are fosters.
I’ve always been a cat lover who rescued stray cats but it wasn’t until last year that I became involved in a proper rescue.
End of June last year, my brother who is incarcerated contacted us about an emergency. A fellow inmate had been taking care of a yard cat. She had a litter of six kittens on the yard, they found homes for five of them. Animal control was going to take her and the remaining kitten. His girlfriend was supposed to fly out and pick them up first but couldn’t make it.
So…I took the momma and the remaining four month old kitten. Three days later, she has a litter of five more.
Fortunately I found a really good rescue that let me be the foster parents for the kittens and they would cover the vaccines / fixing / rehoming and after that, well, I decided to continue and foster other cats for the rescue!
I also volunteer once a week at the adoption kennel for kennel duty.
Seriously, I wish I had become involved with an official rescue sooner, these are my people, my tribe!
We started out with one when we moved here.
There was a feral cat colony in the area, and we started trapping/spay
or neutering/releasing them.
Of course 2 of the ones we trapped decided that living with us and
staying indoors was a wonderful deal and we kept them.
Then, we trapped a nice tortishell and knew we were going to keep her
too, but when we took her in for her spay the vet said “sorry, a bit
late for that, she’s pregnant”. So, she had 3 kittens. We managed to
find good homes for 2 of them, but kept one.
Finally one of the feral guys decided to start hanging around our yard.
He’s not tame by any means, but he comes up and rubs on us and you can
pet him if you are careful. So, we feed him and I guess he’s sort of a
1/2 cat. When I go for walks he comes with me.
