Cant get Nvidia drivers to work

Hello there,
First off I know that questions regarding Nvidia are posted quite frequently here, I’ve read a few discussions here and on r/fedora and still I cannot get it to work.
Also, I did read the How to guide in full, twice.

/sbin/lspci | grep -e VGA outputs

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation AD103 [GeForce RTX 4080] (rev a1)
15:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raphael (rev c1)

so, according to This driver is suitable for any GPU found in 2014 and later.
I should run

sudo dnf update -y # and reboot if you are not on the latest kernel
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia # rhel/centos users can use kmod-nvidia instead
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda #optional for cuda/nvdec/nvenc support

after running these commands, modinfo -F version nvidia outputs
560.35.03
I reboot my computer and nothing, just a black screen and it just keeps on it.
because of it, in order to get access to my computer I have to go on grub and remove the lines that blacklist the nouveau drivers to run.

Can anybody help me troubleshoot this ?

some other commands I think would be helpful

thank you for reading it through.

also worth noting that secure boot is disabled

Can you boot an older kernel or the rescue kernel to get a GUI? If not, try remiving the rhgb quiet and then adding a 3 to end of the kernel command line using the grub2 editor to boot in text mode.

Please run inxi -Fzxx(you may need to install inxi) in a terminal and post the output (as preformatted text using the </> button from the top line of the text entry panel).

Recent kernels may require vendor firmware updates. You can list available updates using sudo fwupdtool get-updates.

The journalctl program provides massive amounts of detail, but some effort is needed to filter out the 99% that is not relevant to your issue. In a termianl, try journalctl --no-hostname -b <N> -p 4 |cat and journalctl --no-hostname -b <N> -g nvidia |catwhere <N> is the negative number counting back from the current boot to one that gave a black screen (e.g., -1 for the previous boot). We don’t care about your hostname, and the |cat very long lines journalctl sometimes produces.

Hello, thanks for the answer !

booting an older kernel gets my access to GUI however it gives a warning

Nvidia kernel module missing, falling back to nouveau

but I do get access to gnome GUI

inxi -Fzxx outputs

Please post the output of dnf list |grep nvidia so we can see what packages are installed.

The Nvidia modules need to be rebuilt for each kernel version. If you follow the rpmfusion HowTo, an rpm package with Nvidia modules should be built automatically when a new kernel is installed and placed in /var/cache/akmods/nvidia-<version>/. Then the module is installed to If you use dnf on the command-line, the module build runs in background and you need to wait minutes to ensure that the build is complete. Sometimes the build fails and an error log is generated – here (older 470-xx Nvidia card using rpmfusion akmods) I got var/cache/akmods/nvidia-470xx/470.256.02-1-for-6.10.3-200.fc40.x86_64.failed.log but now have:

% ls /var/cache/akmods/nvidia-470xx
470.256.02-3-for-6.10.4-200.fc40.x86_64.log  kmod-nvidia-470xx-6.10.4-200.fc40.x86_64-470.256.02-3.fc40.x86_64.rpm
470.256.02-3-for-6.10.5-200.fc40.x86_64.log  kmod-nvidia-470xx-6.10.5-200.fc40.x86_64-470.256.02-3.fc40.x86_64.rpm
470.256.02-3-for-6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64.log  kmod-nvidia-470xx-6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64-470.256.02-3.fc40.x86_64.rpm
% ls /lib/modules/6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64/extra/nvidia-470xx
nvidia-drm.ko.xz  nvidia.ko.xz  nvidia-modeset.ko.xz  nvidia-peermem.ko.xz  nvidia-uvm.ko.xz

Please check for the rpm packages or failed.log files. If you have failed.log files, the error is usually near the end and you can post (as pre-formatted text) the error messages. If you don’t have either failed.log or an rpm package for recent kernels, you may have rebooted before the build was complete.

and also, in the same folder is the kmod-nvidia-6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64-560.35.03-1.fc40.x86_64.rpm, but no file named <something>.failed.log

even if I checked with modinfo -F version nvidia before rebooting ?

Typo: I left out the installed, so should have asked for dnf list installed |grep nvidia. It appears that the build was successful, so the next step is to see why it failed to load using journalctl --no-hostname -b -g nvidia |cat (the `|cat wraps lines so we get to see the whole line when pasted).

dnf list installed | grep nvidia

Try running sudo akmods --rebuild --force then after that completes reboot to see if this may be incorrectly built drivers or if it is something else.

If incorrectly rebuilt it should work after the command completes. If it is something else the problem will remain then more trouble shooting will be necessary.

That won’t work – nvidia won’t load unless nouveau is blacklisted:

There have been several reports where the nvidia fallback service runs after nvidia-powerd is deactivated. Nvidia forums say `nvidia-powerd` should only be used with specific laptop GPUS's and should otherwise be disabled. Some reports with this error still get Nvidia drivers to load, but disabling `nvidia-powerd` is worth trying (it doesn't exist in my old Nvidia iMac, so I have no way to check)

```
systemctl stop nvidia-powerd.service
systemctl disable nvidia-powerd.service
```

rebooting after sudo akmods --rebuild --force did not work

journalctl --no-hostname -b -g nvidia |cat booted on the rescue option gives

I’m running exactly into the same problem here :
Updated Fedora yesterday.
Black screen with only one screen working (of two screens connected), and the mouse, but nothing else today.
Made a fresh install and used the recommended way to install :
https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA?highlight=(\bCategoryHowto\b)

It defaults to the nouveau driver

Tried to rebuild on the fresh install but…

sudo akmods --force --rebuild
[sudo] password for x:
Checking kmods exist for 6.8.5-301.fc40.x86_64 [ OK ]
Files needed for building modules against kernel
6.8.5-301.fc40.x86_64 could not be found as the following
directories are missing:
/usr/src/kernels/6.8.5-301.fc40.x86_64/
/lib/modules/6.8.5-301.fc40.x86_64/build/Is the correct kernel-devel package installed? [FAILED]

I also re-installed fedora yesterday, hopefully we can solve it on this thread or find the necessary information to bug report it

I don’t think we exhausted the search for the details that would explain the problem.
What is the current status of the system? I recommend installing all available updates before trying to install Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion, then verify that the build didn’t generate a
/var/cache/akmods/nvidia**.failed.log and did produce an rpm file.

There may be some similar symptoms, but the original post had a successful build of appropriate nvidia drivers from rpmfusion for kernel 6.10.6-200. Please start a new thread so we can focus on one problem at a time.

You should not be using older kernels as there have been important security and functional updates to reach 6.10.6. The nvidia drivers have to rebuilt for each new kernel version, so you need to update and then build.

Please insure that the system is fully updated (including vendor firmware) so you aren’t wasting time on a bug that has been fixed, and provide the output from inxi -Fzxx so we can see what hardware you have.

I have been having problems with my computer’s OS since last friday the 23rd.
I tried installing fedora on that day and the nvidia drivers didn’t work I tried a bunch of things, from installing it through the GUI to downloading the installer from nvidia’s website nothing worked.
After that I tried out some other distros but decided to format my computer back to fedora, what I did on my install yesterday : enabled third-party repositories, added a few dnf configs

fastestmirror=True
max_parallel_downloads=10
defaultyes=True
keepcache=True

updated the system, installed zsh , ran
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
updated again.
and tried
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda

and this time, unlike on the 23rd, I thought that looking for help would be better than trying every install on the book.

ls /var/cache/akmods/ only outputs

nvidia

and ls /var/cache/akmods/nvidia outputs

560.35.03-1-for-6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64.log  kmod-nvidia-6.10.6-200.fc40.x86_64-560.35.03-1.fc40.x86_64.rpm

and the log is as I posted before (im leaving out the first lines cause it would be too large to post on the forum)

The new akmodsbuild again appears to be successful. Just to be sure, check that the output from dnf list install \*nvidia\* is the same as your previous post. There have been issues with Nvidia hardware when using adapters to connect monitors. 560.35 was supposed to fix one of them (DVI-HDMI). Do you use a KVM hub or some sort of adapter to connect to the monitor?
